The Hawaiian Nation had their collective focus squarely set on Las Vegas tonight, as proud islander BJ Penn prepared to take to the Octagon to face former Strikeforce welterweight champ Nick Diaz in the main event at UFC 137. However, little did they know the bout would likely be Penn’s last.
Diaz picked Penn apart with strikes after struggling in the opening round. Afterwards the controversial Californian called champ Georges St. Pierre out. However, in much more important news, Penn stated he was done with MMA after finding himself unable to compete at an elite level while also explaining he wanted to focus on his growing family.
Also on show, among the many intriguing match-ups, powerful Frenchman Cheick Kongo outpointedTUF 10 alumnus Matt Mitrione, while famed striker Mirko Filipovic also hung his gloves up after being pounded out by the smaller Roy Nelson in the third round of their main card clash.
