Fighters.com’s sixth-ranked heavyweight Shane Carwin (10-0) will fight second-ranked heavyweight and UFC champion Brock Lesnar (4-1) at UFC 108 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas January 2, Carwin told Fighters.com’s partner Internet radio broadcast MMA Gospel Monday.
Lesnar withdrew from his UFC 106 title defense versus Carwin (10-0) due to illness, according to Yahoo!Sports.
UFC President Dana White wasn’t immediately positive what would happen to Carwin’s title shot, but Carwin told MMA Gospel Monday afternoon that his manager confirmed to him the fight has been rescheduled for UFC 108.
Carwin’s manager, Jason Genet, told MMA Gospel, “We’re disappointed. Shane had H1N1 and still wanted to fight! We will just be that much better come January.”
White had earlier denied that Lesnar’s illness is the H1N1 flu virus, erroneously called “swine flu”.
Fighters.com has not confirmed the rescheduled fight with the UFC.
MMA Gospel broadcaster and Fighters.com staff writer Josh Turner contributed to this report.
