UFC fighter Chael Sonnen has earned a number of paychecks in Las Vegas as a prominent member of the organization’s roster. However, the next time he’s in Sin City, Sonnen may want to stop by a few casinos to see if they’re in need of a magic act, as the silver-tongued scrapper has shown an uncanny ability to pull a title-fight out of his hat.
Sonnen’s latest trickery was confirmed when the UFC announced he would be squaring off against light heavyweight champion Jon Jones as an opposing coach on the Ultimate Fighter 17 as well as in an April 27 bout with “Bones’” belt on the line. Sonnen will enter the evening with a TKO loss to Anderson Silva in his rear-view mirror, while the 26-year old divisional king is 17-1 and looked sharp in ever appearance thus far in the Octagon.
Sonnen’s name was first linked with Jones’ when he stepped up on short notice as a potential replacement for the injured Dan Henderson eight days before a PPV headliner. Jones turned down the match-up, wanting more time to get ready, and Sonnen has been needling him for the fight ever since.
TUF 17 is scheduled to air in January 2013 and will feature middleweights.
