One of the numerous fighters affected by Strikeforce’s recent decision to cancel a November 3 event was Tim Kennedy, an accomplished middleweight with wins over a number of respectable adversaries and status as one of the company’s fan-favorites. Kennedy, who also happens to be a Special Forces veteran, has never been afraid to speak his mind and immediately went online to express his disappointment in the decision to postpone his expected payday.
While nothing has been confirmed, Kennedy has at least been given the indication the company may still compensate the affected fighters for their trouble, providing a slim silver-lining around the dark cloud hovering over the since-scrapped show.
“I was really mad at that point,” said Kennedy of his reaction to the disappointing news in an interview with MMAJunkie. “But moments later, (matchmaker) Sean Shelby called me from Brazil, and he was super cool. He’s like, ‘There’s nothing we can do. We found out online just like you did that Showtime wasn’t going to be televising the event, and if the fight’s not televised, Strikeforce isn’t going to have a card.’”
“I was like, ‘That’s great Sean, but you get paid a salary and I get paid to fight. Zuffa doesn’t cut me a monthly check and pay for my insurance unless I tear my foot off,’” continued Kennedy, adding he was then told Strikeforce would make up for it though not offered any specifics about what that meant.
“If they’re going to take care of us, which I think is the right thing to do, I’m going to be totally grateful. I think it’s a demonstration that sometimes they do have their heart in the right place,” explained Kennedy, though the middleweight remained a bit skeptical as to whether Strikeforce would indeed come through, admitting he “wouldn’t cry a river” if they didn’t.
Instead of worrying too much about factors out of his control, Kennedy has instead decided to focus his energy on honing his craft in preparation for a fight in January when Strikeforce is expected to put on a show featuring a “stacked” lineup.
