Alistair Overeem receiving title-shot when he returns to the ring in 2013

UFC heavyweight Alistair Overeem has been sitting on the sidelines for the past six months after failing a random drug test where he was shown to have an elevated T:E level resulting from testosterone use. Prior to the positive hit, the hard-hitting finisher was scheduled to face Junior dos Santos for a title but obviously saw the opportunity laid to waste by the subsequent suspension he suffered.

However, it appears Overeem’s shot at the divisional belt was only delayed by the matter, as UFC President Dana White revealed “The Demolition Man” will get a crack at the winner of Dos Santos’ upcoming defense against Cain Velasquez.

White announced Overeem’s status as a top contender in a conversation with media members after the end of the UFC 153 post-fight press conference. MMAFighting was on hand to record the statement.

Overeem Believes Dos Santos is Afraid to Fight Him

Velasquez and JDS are set to scrap on December 29 at UFC 155. Meanwhile, Overeem’s mandated vacation expires in December as well, freeing him up for a title-fight in either March/April.
