Last night at Bellator 76, lightweight Eddie Alvarez did little to hurt his stock in what very well could have been the last bout of his Bellator career. The fight was the final on Alvarez’s contract with the company, leaving him to explore free agency and likely sign with the UFC barring a situation where Bellator chooses to match the organization’s offer.
The main event match-up featured Alvarez taking on tournament finalist Patricky Freire, a hard-hitting Brazilian with BJJ to boot. However, the only time things truly hit the mat was when Alvarez landed a beautifully brutal headkick that sent “Pitbull” down to the canvas. Alvarez followed it up with another strike to cement the victory, improving his overall record to 24-3 in the process and saving himself the stress of leaving Bellator on a sour note.
Also in action at the show, eight featherweights took to the cage in hopes of advancing to the next round of the Season 7 tournament. In the end, Wagnney Fabiano, Mike Richman, and Shabulat Shamhalaev all exited the evening with first-frame stoppages in tow, while fan-favorite Rad Martinez picked up a hard-earned decision victory over opponent Nazareno Malegarie.
