John Dodson out to test Demetrious Johnson’s speed in eventual flyweight title-fight

UFC flyweight John Dodson scored the biggest victory of his career last Friday night when he became the first man to finish highly-touted 125er Jussier Formiga, knocking the Brazilian grappler out in the second round of their contendership-determining duel at UFC on FX 5. For his next trick, “The Magician” plans on upping the stakes by not only beating champion Demetrious Johnson in their forthcoming fight but doing so at his own game.

“I’m gonna challenge his speed and I wanna see how fast he can go,” said Dodson in an interview with Fuel TV after his win. “I wanna push him where his strength is…I want to push him faster and harder than he can go.”

Dodson elaborated on his goal, saying he was interested in seeing how Johnson’s conditioning held up against his own. “Mighty Mouse” has long been labeled as the UFC’s fastest fighter based on the incredibly quick technique displayed in past outings including wins over Norifumi “Kid” Yamamoto, Miguel Torres, and Ian McCall.

Regardless of Johnson’s reputation, Dodson remains confident he can come out on top and feels his knockout of an opponent like Formiga should erase any doubt in his ability to do so even if some in attendance didn’t appreciate his early effort in the bout.

“I didn’t feel like I had to finish the fight because of the fans, I thought I had to finish the fight to stamp that #1 contender’s spot,” explained Dodson, referring to any perceived pressure he may have felt after being booed in the opening round.
