The UFC is wasting no time keeping the flyweight division rolling after crowning the promotion’s first 125-pound champion – Demetrious Johnson – at UFC 152. Now that they have a #1 in place, they now need a #1 contender, and as it turns out Johnson will know exactly who he is fighting next when UFC on FX 5 is said and done.
Ultimate Fighter 14 winner John Dodson is set to fight Jussier Formiga at tomorrow night’s show and the winner will go on to fight Johnson for the flyweight title. In a statement from the UFC confirming the bout’s status, Dodson explained, “I want the fight against DJ. We are the two fastest fighters in the UFC and I want to match my speed against his. Some people say he’s the fastest, some people say I am. We got to fight to see who is the fastest. I really want to match what I got against what he’s got.”
Dodson (13-5) went up to bantamweight on TUF 14 where he eventually beat TJ Dillashaw by TKO to be crowned the season’s winner. After earning the distinction he quickly returned to the flyweight division and defeated Tim Elliot by unanimous decision in May.
Formiga (14-1) is making his promotional debut in the bout against Dodson. He is currently riding a five-fight winning streak, four of which featured submissions including a Rear-Naked Choke over Michael Willian Costa to defend his Shooto South American Championship (his second time defeating Costa).
UFC on FX 5 marks the second time the UFC brings the Octagon to Minnesota and will be headlined by a heavyweight tilt between Antonio Silva-Travis Browne.
