UFC Interim Bantamweight Champion Renan Barao defeated Eddie Wineland by knockout in the second round of their co-main event bout at UFC 165: Jones Vs Gustafsson to retain his title, but if you ask Wineland the fight was stopped too soon. Barao landed a turning side kick that landed on the head of Wineland and stumbled him to the ground. Barao swarmed with punches and landed to decent shots before the ref jumped in to halt the bout. Wineland was up in a hurry, and while he wasn’t visibly complaining in the octagon, he did let the media know that he didn’t agree with the stop.
Eddie Wineland said at the press conference:
“Personal opinion, I think its bullshit. He caught me with a great kick. I was by no means out. I was on my way back up, but the referees have their own discretion, and that’s what he felt was the right call. My hat’s off to Renan. It was a good kick.”
UFC President Dana White Added:
“It’s one of those tough calls. Trust me, I don’t like it when fights are stopped and the guy jumps right up, but he got blasted with that kick, and that’s a nasty kick that knocks people out, and he looked wobbly when he got up. If I thought it was, I’d be smashing the ref. But that was a tough one.”
