UFC Fans were shocked to hear that not only was BJ Penn going to return to the octagon, but he was also to take on former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar at Featherweight after coaching The Ultimate Fighter. To get ready for the fight and help coach on The Ultimate Fighter, Penn has called on the man who gave him his black belt in 1998; Nova Uniao’s head coach Andre Pederneiras. In a recent interview, Pederneiras talked about receiving the call from Penn and how Penn will most likely train for the fight in Rio.
Pederneiras told MMAFighting:
“It was a honor to receive this invitation. B.J. and his brother are really close. He is really excited and motivated with his fight against Edgar. It’s going to be a great opportunity for me to show my work as a coach to the audience outside of Brazil, which is not used to see my work closely.”
“Besides my family, I spoke with some of my older students before taking this decision. They will be responsible for the training, keeping me updated with videos.”
“We’ve studied Edgar’s game a lot for Aldo’s fight. so I believe there’s no better place and sparrings better for B.J. to come back in great fashion and motivated.”
