A few weeks ago UFC fighter Chael Sonnen’s phone rang with an offer to potentially face 205-pound champion Jon Jones with less than a week to train for the tilt. Even though Sonnen hadn’t been in the gym since his July loss to Anderson Silva, the 35-year old grappler still jumped at the opportunity even though the match-up never actually materialized and “Bones” was booked against Vitor Belfort instead.
This time around Sonnen won’t be caught with his pants down, so to speak, and has immersed himself in full camp just in case the injury-prone Belfort has to back out.
“Chael Sonnen is in a full training camp right now. He’s been training since he got offered the Jones fight (for UFC 151). He said, ‘I’m in full camp right now because Vitor will get hurt and pull out, and it will be Jones vs. Sonnen, anyway’,” said UFC President Dana White in a recent conversation with media members (as transcribed by MMAJunkie).
If Belfort does make it to the September 22 scrap as expected, Sonnen’s focus will then turn to a showdown with former light heavyweight title-holder Forrest Griffin at UFC 155 in December.
