Today on the UFC 165: Jones Vs Gustafsson conference call, UFC President Dana White was asked directly about the status of the Bantamweight Champion Dominick Cruz. Cruz has been sidelined since October of 2011 with multiple knee injuries, and now that Interim Champion Renan Barao is set to defend the belt for a second time, the media wanted to know if this would be the last time the interim belt would be defended. According to White, the UFC is prepared to strip Cruz of his belt if he isn’t ready to go at the beginning of 2014. White says he sat down with Cruz a few weeks ago and discussed the time table.
“I hope this is the last time that it will be the interim title fight. We’re expecting his return by the beginning of the year, and if he can’t return at the beginning of the year then we’re going to have to make a decision.”
“He came in here a few weeks ago and had lunch with me and Lorenzo (Fertitta), and he was very confident that he’d be ready to go at the beginning of the year.”
