According to multiple reports from friends and family, UFC Featherweight Matt Grice was in a serious car accident on Sunday, and had emergency surgery. While details are few and far between, a source is saying Grice was treated for bleeding on his brain, and is out of surgery. The same source is also saying that the doctors are waiting until morning to make any updates on his current condition, but his eyes are responding to light which indicates brain activity.
Grice is scheduled to fight Jeremy Larsen at UFC 166 in October, but that fight is more than likely not going to happen. Grice is coming off of a ‘fight of the night’ bonus winning performance against Dennis Bermudez at UFC 157 in February this year. The fight entertained UFC President Dana White so much, he said if fighters wanted to avoid getting cut after a loss they needed to ‘fight like Matt Grice.’
The Oklahoma City Police have released a statement on Grice’s condition:
On Sunday, Sept 8th, at approximately 4pm off-duty Officer Matthew Grice (age 32) was involved in a serious multi-car accident in Shawnee, OK (accident investigated by Oklahoma Highway Patrol). The accident left him in critical condition.
Officer Grice was transported to an Oklahoma City hospital ,where his status is currently listed as confidential. The Grice family has asked for privacy as they deal with this sudden and unfortunate situation.
Officer Grice has been with the Oklahoma City Police Department for 5 years.
