Din Thomas wants Aldo and Teammate Mike Brown, if He's in the Way

Longtime veteran Din Thomas, has made his intentions known.

A former UFC lightweight contender, Thomas dropped down to the 145-pound division after back-to-back losses at 155 inside the octagon, and is now riding a three fight win streak in his first three tries at the featherweight class.

After a bout that pitted former boxing champion and bad boy Ricardo Mayorga against Thomas failed to materialize in the Shine Fights promotion, “Dinyero” wants a change…a BIG change.

“I’m talking to Sean Shelby now about the WEC, so hopefully next year we can make something happen with the WEC and I can get a good run at that title”, said Thomas while speaking with “The Fight Nerd” just a couple of weeks ago for the UFC Fan Expo, in Boston which strolled its way to the Red Sox war zone for UFC 118.

In fact, beyond the WEC, Thomas has his sights set much higher then just making his way into the organization–he want’s Aldo, the WEC featherweight kingpin, and whoever else will be in his way.

“Nobody has been able to really challenge Jose Aldo, and I think with my style, and with my experience I can hopefully give him a good run”, said Din.

“Theres a lot of guys. You’ve got Josh Grispi, Manny Gamburyan, Mike Brown–I mean, Mike Brown is my boy, but if we had to fight for a spot at the title, we’d just have to do it”, continued the American Top Team fighter.

“Theirs a lot of tough guys. I’m not looking for an easy road, and I don’t think there’s going to be any easy fights at the WEC.”

Thomas follows a trend that is less traveled in MMA circles, as fighting teammates is generally a gray area in the MMA community–which can be specifically highlighted by teammates and top welterweights Josh Koscheck and Jon Fitch, who have repeatedly denied that they would ever face one another. In fact, Fitch has gone to say that should Josh prove successful in his bid against Georges St. Pierre for the 170-pound title, Fitch will move up to the middleweight division.

Din Thomas, thinks that’s absurd.

“Honestly, I ain’t got no problem fighting nobody… At the end of the day its about work”, said the 33-year-old.

“I’d rather fight somebody that I know and like because we’re going to get paid. If I don’t know you and don’t like you, why am I going to help you get paid? It’s all about making money and making a living in our career. So if me and Mike Brown ever had to fight, I would embrace it.”

I like Thomas’ approach to the potential match up with Brown. If more people adopted the same outlook, we could possibly some of the larger match ups, larger equity match ups that an organization could provide. Fitch and Kos of the American Kickboxing Academy are obvious choices, Lyoto Machida and Anderson Silva definitely come to mind and among other matches.

So, MMA peeps, how do you like Thomas’ chances against either Aldo or Brown? Should he honor the unwritten rule that you don’t fight your own teammate? You be the judge, let your opinions know below.
