UPDATE: Boxing Champ Ricardo Mayorga Transitioning To MMA
By: Fighters.com Staff Posted On: September 5, 2009 at 1:03amNicaraguan former WBC welterweight boxing champion Ricardo Mayorga will make his MMA debut at Shine Fights, according to Shine Fights promoter Dorian Price (8-3) on the Shine Fights II Internet broadcast Friday night.
Fighters.com confirmed Price’s announcement Saturday morning with another source close to Shine Fights who said nothing has been signed, but that’s the intention of both Mayorga and Shine Fights.
Thirty-five year old Mayorga is 28-7-1 with 22 knockouts in the boxing ring, most recently suffering a twelfth-round knockout to “Sugar” Shane Mosely in September 2008.
Tuesday, Mayorga filed a breach of contract lawsuit against boxing promoter Don King.

First of all he’s already old. Second he’s too slow to be able to compete with the pace of an MMA fight.
Maybe they just want his fan base. If he still has a few good fights in him his WWF type persona might bring in more fans.
If Mayorga is now going to fight in MMA then that pretty much says that he figures that his days in Boxing are through. He better hope that they match him up with someone who has limited skills, no ground game, and who will stand right in front of him and swing for the fences.
Someone is getting their ass kicked and its not Mayorga … Everyone here forgets that this guy fought over 100 barenuckle fights for money as a child in his home country, that alone made him transition to boxing …
Mayorga would fit right in with the WWF, I mean UFC. He also has kick boxing experience. Forget bareknuckle experience, that means squat in the ring.
He will get crushed by the first MMA skilled fighter. Until that happens, he’ll pick up many new fans.
