Bellator MMA’s ninth season debuts this Saturday night in Connecticut with a middleweight bout between Alexander Shlemenko and Brett Cooper in the main event slot, but the event was supposed to feature the Fight Masters finals fight between Joe Riggs and Mike Bronzoulis. It turns out Riggs has sustained a pretty major eye injury, and in case there were any doubters, he posted a photo of the eye from the night it happened. Check it out below.
Riggs spoke with Sports Illustrated about the training accident that landed him in a four hour surgery when he ‘suffered a partial orbital bone fracture and retina detachment’ from an errant kick in training three weeks ago. According to Bellator officials, the bout will be rescheduled as soon as Riggs is ready.
Riggs told SI.com:
“My sparring partner threw a high kick and I blocked it, but his toe went through my head gear. I was in horrible pain and they had to pry my eye open to see the damage.”
“I can be ready [to fight] in October or [on] Nov. 2, if they need me.”
Just so there’s no confusion, this is what my eye looked like the night of my injury. But I’m good now lol pic.twitter.com/71WSc1s93v
