UFC Lightweight Al Iaquinta accomplished a long time goal of winning a fight inside the UFC Octagon when he defeated Ryan Couture at UFC 164. Iaquinta made it all the way to the finals on the fifteenth season of The Ultimate Fighter, but came up short at the finale when he was defeated by Michael Chiesa. After having accomplished his first goal, Iaquinta told Dana Becker from Fightline.com that he is all set to set the bar even higher. Iaquinta also talked about the camp leading up to the bout, how he felt on fight day, and how he had to remind himself to have fun when he got in the octagon.
Iaquinta told Fightline:
“There wasn’t much Ryan threw at me that I hadn’t been prepared for in training.”
“I’ll be back in the gym right away. I’ll get a few weeks of training in and I’ll be trying to get back in the cage as soon as possible.”
“The morning of the fight, I was thinking about how I had prepared my whole life for this. I was in shape and feeling strong. I told myself the only thing left to do was have fun and enjoy the fight.”
“Getting my hand raised was the best feeling in the world. I had set a goal to win my first fight in the UFC and I had reached it. Now, I have to re-evaluate my goals going forward and I have a whole new set to work towards.”
“I ate dinner with my family and then had a few drinks at the bar with my friends. Everything in Milwaukee closes at 2 (a.m.) so the party got shut down pretty early.”
