Controversial UFC competitor Chael Sonnen bragged in the past about being middleweight champion after beating Anderson Silva for four rounds despite actually being submitted in the fifth. Now it seems Sonnen is boasting about being the light heavyweight title-holder as well based on Jon Jones’ recent decision to decline a short notice scrap with him.
In a Facebook post poking fun at Jones, Sonnen explained a deal had been worked out where he would leave “Bones” alone in exchange for the divisional strap.
“I am no longer permitted to speak ill of the former champion Jon Jones as we have come to an agreement,” wrote Sonnen. “I will stop tearing him down verbally and in exchange he has relinquished his belt to me.”
“I would like to read a prepared statement from the former Champion,” Sonnen continued before providing his evidence.
In every man’s life a choice must eventually be made. Run or fight. I said I wouldn’t duck any man as champion. But you are no ordinary man. You’ve spoken nothing but truth in your attempt to gain a title fight with me. My last act of cowardness is to hand over what you would have beaten out of me 8 days from today. The UFC LHW Title. Now I must refocus my life. Good luck Champ.
Jon Bones Jones
P.S. I just ordered your best selling book, A Voice of Reason from Amazon, I’ve been told by Greg Jackson that it will help me get through this tough time. Thanks!”
Jones has yet to address Sonnen’s statement or attempt to goad him into a future meeting. His next bout is scheduled to take place on September 22 where he’ll fight Vitor Belfort, while Sonnen is set to face Forrest Griffin in late December.
