Chas Skelly’s Octagon debut didn’t go his way, so the featherweight made sure opportunity No. 2 would not slip by.

Skelly locked up a crank and held tight, scoring a submission over Tom Niinimaki Saturday night at UFC Fight Night 49. The win moved his overall record to 12-1, including seven victories via submission.

“The first fight, I didn’t press the action,” he said. “We are taught to just squeeze, to squeeze the life out of you and break your jaw if you have to.”

Skelly, who lost a majority decision to Mirsad Bektic this past April, admitted that he is a “wrestler and grappler first and foremost” but he showed his ground skills.

“I knew once I got the back, it was only a matter of time until I got the submission,” he said.

Niinimaki is now 22-6-1 in his career.
