Anderson Silva vs Chael Sonnen II Next, According to Dana White

No, it won’t be Vitor Belfort. Apparently, Chael Sonnen‘s riveting performance at UFC 117 on August 7. was enough to warrant an immediate rematch.

UFC head honcho Dana White has made the business what it is, by putting together exciting fights–the ones that the fans are clamoring for. And while the Vitor Belfort vs Anderson Silva match up was originally scheduled for last April at UFC 112 in Abu Dhabi, many speculated that after “The Phenom” would recover correctly and efficiently, that he would be next on the table for “The Spider”–but that seems far from certain.

White appeared today on ESPN’s Sportscenter, and potentially broke the news for what’s next on the table for both contender Chael Sonnen and Anderson Silva—all sign’s point to an immediate rematch.

“Yeah, I think that’s the fight that fans want to see,” White said about the potential rematch between Sonnen-Silva. “The way that I see my job is my job is to give the fans what they want. I think that’s the fight they want to see. We got some interesting fights in that division. Vitor Belfort is still out there. I’m looking towards the Chael Sonnen rematch. Yes.”

While Vitor was mentioned in passing, it appears that Dana White is leaning towards the Sonnen rematch for “The Spider”. In some regards, it’s a Pay Per View that will most definitely sell. According to the UFC President, during the post-fight press conference following UFC 117, in preliminary numbers, Anderson Silva pulled in his largest sales in the PPV market, which later was confirmed to be anywhere from 600,000 up to 1 million buys, regardless–making the PPV Silva’s largest as a headliner.

With a rematch imminent, add in some more of Sonnen’s patented verbal jabs, and the drama that occurred in their original outing (where Chael largely dominated the fight for 4 and a half round before being submitted in the waning moments of the fight with an arm bar/triangle choke by the aforementioned Silva), it’s a sure selling PPV, and more importantly, a rematch that the fans and media alike want to see.

While no time line on the fight is present, since Silva is reportedly recovering from injuries sustained prior to the bout with Sonnen.

Does Sonnen warrant an immediate rematch? Should Silva be fighting Vitor next–or who do you deem a more worthy challenger? Voice your opinions below.

I definitely think that an immediate rematch is in order here and am glad that’s the way it looks like it’s going. As you said, this is a sure fire PPV hit. It’s funny- before the fight I was tired of watching Anderson Silva fight because he was destroying everyone. But now that Chael Sonnen did what he did, I can’t wait to see the rematch.

disagree–I’m selfish, I’d like to see Anderson fight them both. Conceivably, if Silva beats Chael again, which won’t be an easy task, I’d like to see how his striking will match up against Vitor, since Chael was able to find success in their first fight on the feet. But, then again, Vitor has the UFC’s headache-middleweight Yushin Okami to have to deal with next. Okami’s style spells drama for Belfort. But, let’s see what happens.

A rematch , it makes no sense, everyone knows who will win ( the champion) but it is easy make money that way.
Sonnen is not a threat for Anderson next time a hopping to see from Anderson a Flying Arm Bar

I would like to see chael and silva again. i also have been saying that vitor vs silva would be a good match to see. but i would like to see vitor fight someone before he gets in with a champ. vitor has been out for a while now. not sure if he would have ring rust or not. but rather be safe then sorry. CHAEL vs SILVA 2 all the way.

Silva learns from all of his fights and I think he will be ready for Chael so a rematch would be awsome. Eventually Silva will beat them both witch ever way it happens.

How many fights has vitor had since he came back?…and all the sudden he deserves a title shot. Sonnen beat the bricks off and feel to a stupid mistake anyone could possible fall to, considering Andersons ground game. He deserves the rematch NOW!

Lets all face it Silva is done! Sonnen beat the hell out of him and with a shit call the fight was over. Silva should just quit now before he ends up like chuck liddel and loose every fight after. I resently looked up P4P best fighters and Silva was like #3 and I wrote the editor they might want to change that, considering Silva looked like a fish out of water in his last fight. Want a good fight? Vitor Vs Sonnen for the title. get SILVA THE HELL OUT!

Sonnen beat the hell out of Silva in UFC117?? Sonnen was winning on points no question!

But really beating the crap out of Silva? thats laughable! Silva went clutch like MJ on bball…
Watch the fight again, if someone was so dominating and beating the crap out of someone
like in Sonnen’s position for 4.5 rnds like that… the other guy wouldve been knocked out/TKO’d, yet Silva didnt seem that bothered…or rocked. Either Silva’s got a titannium chin or it really IS Pillow Hands Sonnen…

No matter how you look at it, Silva made Sonnen tap (of course once again Sonnen gives the dodgy single tap to confuse things a bit so he can later make up excuses)

Would have been quite nice if Silva squeezed a bit more on the neck and trapped arm or pulled the arm bar harder afterwards, just to show everyone Sonnen’s little dodginess…

well.thats one option…and would be a very good fight..but if you look at what sonnen did to silva, it deserves a immediate rematch…even tho he didnt, he DOMINATED silva..so the rematch would make more sense..but either way they would both be amazing fights

i really want them to have a rematch…coz among all the contender in that division only sonnen dominated silva in not just a round, 4 and half rounds to make that clear…so sonnen really deserves to have a rematch///
