UFC executives are not going to take Monday’s “brawl” between Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier as a laughing matter.
The promotion announced plans to investigate the matter, along with the Nevada Athletic Commission.
“This is certainly not a proud moment for the UFC organization,” said Kirk Hendrick, the UFC’s Chief Legal Officer, on UFC.com. “We expect more from our athletes, especially these two gentlemen, who are very well-trained and highly educated professionals. Their actions were clearly a violation of the UFC’s code of conduct.
“There are going to be ramifications. “Whether you’re the champion, or this is your first fight in the UFC, there are going to be ramifications from the UFC for these actions.”
UFC president Dana White was out of the country when Jones and Cormier rumbled on the stage during face-offs. Dave Sholler, head of the UFC’s PR department, attempted to calm the situation, but instead became part of it all as both fighters tumbled through the banner.
The NAC has requested a video of the ordeal. Penalties will be handed out “after the commission has made a decision,” Hendrick said.
