Sandman Positive for Banned Substances

Posted On: July 30, 2008 at 4:51am

“Sandman” James Irvin (14-5) has tested positive for the non-approved painkillers Methadone and Oxymorphone, according to the results of a post-fight urinalysis by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

Irvin was knocked out in 61 seconds by Fighters.com’s Middleweight Champion and UFC Champ “Spider” Anderson Silva (22-4) in their 19 July fight.

Irvin has 20 days to respond to the findings and may be fined and/or suspended by the NSAC.

Methadone is a synthetic opioid used to treat opioid dependence, and can be prescribed to manage chronic pain.  Oxymorphone is a semi-synthetic opioid painkiller.

How many times do we hear that the loser of a fight tested positive for banned substances?

Conclusion: If you don’t feel like you’re talented enough, you try to find talent in a bottle and it’s not there either.

CE thats a stupid conclusion. did you take the time to think that maybe his face hurts after getting his head smashed in. i dont think that you would be walking around fine afterwards either. after a constant use of pain killers eventually you would have to go to something stronger. 90% of the athletes today are on some kind of pain killer, about 75% of them dont get caught

But what about the ones that don’t take the drugs, they are at a huge disadvantage.

Scott, the implication is that he used the painkillers before the fight, before he got hit in the face.

Your stats are about as reliable as my initial observation.

i was over exagerating on the stats a little but the point is still the same, it doesnt matter when he was tested positive, almost every athlete uses pain killers especially those that are in contact sports, maybe he was preparing for the beating, and no the ones who dont take the drugs arent at a disadvantage, the ones who do take the drugs are making themselves weaker and burned out. but i do think that every athlete who uses substances that are banned should be penalized and fined maybe even booted from the competition
