Nick Diaz will return to the Octagon.

Diaz (26-9) signed a new fight contract with the promotion on Thursday, confirmed by a post on Twitter by UFC president Dana White. Diaz, a former Strikeforce champion, announced his retirement following a loss to Georges St-Pierre.

“He’s back,” White wrote, along with posting a picture of himself, Diaz and Lorenzo Fertitta. “Nick Diaz just signed a new bout agreement 2 fight. Details coming soon.”

Most immediately jumped to Diaz vs. Anderson Silva in a super-fight, but White put a damper on those talks, saying, “There is no update on Anderson vs. Diaz. Anderson can’t fight till Feb. Lorenzo and I have not even talked to Anderson.”

That would mean another fighter has signed on the dotted line to meet Diaz. The contract is for three fights and Diaz hinted as a possible return in early 2015.

“I’ve been staying in shape pretty good, doing a lot of running,” he said. “It’s been a good experience having this much time off. I can fight tomorrow, tonight.”

Diaz continued, saying that it had to “sort things out” with White and Fertitta.

“I’ve been getting some things done,” he added. “Just because I’m not getting punched around every day doesn’t mean I’m not focused on what I’m doing.”
