Shortly after the conclusion of UFC 147 the UFC announced its intent to return to Brazil in October. Since then little news has surfaced pertaining to the specifics of the card, though bouts between Jose Aldo-Erik Koch and Wanderlei Silva-Vitor Belfort have both been rumored as potentially being placed on the lineup.
Now it appears fans can throw heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos in the mix as well, as “Cigano” recently came forward to express his interest in competing in Brazil this fall with Cain Velasquez serving as his divisional foe.
“I don’t know who my next opponent is or where my fight is going to be, but if my next fight is in Brazil and against Cain Velasquez, I’m really happy,” revealed Dos Santos in an interview with MMAJunkie. “I want to fight in Brazil, and if I fight against Cain again, I think it’s going to be a good fight.”
Velasquez is believed to be the clear cut #1 contender while Alistair Overeem serves out a nine-month break from licensure courtesy of the Nevada Athletic Commission in relation to a failed drug test involving testosterone use.
“It’s not a fake championship. If you use things like that, you’re going to be a fake champion, and if you win, sometimes you’re going to win against somebody who doesn’t use those things,” Dos Santos continued, referring to Overeem’s situation. “I don’t agree with that, and I think the athletic commission has to be more vigilant about this.”
