Fans will have to get used to adding the tag “former” in front of “UFC middleweight champion” when it comes to Anderson Silva despite how strange the label sounds after the Brazilian’s brilliant run with the belt. However, with Chris Weidman squishing “The Spider” at UFC 162, Silva can indeed no longer lay claim to divisional gold.
Silva spoke about his loss at the post-event press conference where he said he tried his best, confessing he probably shouldn’t have clowned around as much as he did when it came to Weidman’s striking.
“I always say I do my best and I feel tonight I did my best. I tried to induce Chris into playing my game and that didn’t work. He threw some shots that landed. I got caught, so obviously my gameplan didn’t work tonight. I can’t make any excuses.”
“I would never fight a fight to lose. I trained four months for this fight to win this fight. It is what happened. I lost the fight. A fight’s a fight.”
