UFC's Brock Lesnar Takes The Throne As The New Emperor - Fighters.com's July Heavyweight Top Ten
By: Chad Edward Posted On: July 4, 2010 at 10:25am
For Fighters.com and UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar (5-1) it’s been a three-year roller coaster from MMA novelty to undisputed heavyweight champion. But, after former top-ranked “Last Emperor” Fedor Emelianenko’s (31-2) stunning loss to “Vai Cavalo” Fabricio Werdum (14-4-1) at Strikeforce/M-1 Global in San Jose June 26 and Lesnar’s arm triangle submission of Shane Carwin (12-1) at UFC 116 Saturday, there can be no dispute among any rational fan, fighter, journalist, or promoter that indeed Lesnar now sits atop the mountain in the world heavyweight rankings.
The debate is over, for now.
Lesnar already has second-ranked Cain Velasquez’s (8-0) name on his dance card to defend his new status.
Throughout the last year’s Emelianenko-Lesnar debate, UFC President Dana White repeated “the best fighters in the world fight the best three times per year.” Yet, Lesnar has never passed that threshold. Of course, Lesnar suffered from diverticulitis for several months, which postponed his UFC title defense until Saturday. However, even without the illness, Lesnar would’ve only fought twice in 2009.
Fighters.com challenges White to make good on his promise to keep Lesnar on a four-month fight schedule, which would perch the Lesnar-Velasquez matchup at the top of the UFC 121 card rumored to be heading for Oberhausen, Germany. More likely though, White will end the year with the matchup at UFC 122 in Las Vegas.
At UFC 117 in Oakland August 7, it seems the next top UFC contender will be decided betwen third-ranked “Cigano” Junior dos Santos (11-2) and The Ultimate Fighter 10 champion “Big Country” Roy Nelson (15-4).
Werdum ascends to the fourth spot with his submission of Emelianenko in the matchup promoted to determine the next Strikeforce title challenger to ninth-ranked “Demolition Man” Alistair Overeem (33-11). However, it seems that was only if Emelianenko had won. Since the inconcievable Werdum victory, Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker has thrown just about every potential matchup at the wall to see what sticks except the natural Overeem-Werdum title fight to crown a clear Strikeforce champion. Maybe Werdum and Emelianenko will rematch. Maybe Overeem and Emelianenko will fight for the title to determine who gets the next crack at higher-ranked Werdum. It’s all confusing and Fighters.com encourages Coker to go with plan A and match the champ Overeem with the top contender Werdum.
Carwin drops to the fifth spot with his loss to Lesnar. Carwin…dare I use the word…dominated Lesnar in round one, but exposed a weakness on his back in round two that must be fixed if 35-year old Carwin expects to make another run to the top.
Emelianenko drops to the sixth spot. I’m willing to have a reasonable discussion about where Emelianenko ranks, but not with anyone who’ll continue to rank Emelianenko first. You’re delusional. Part of Emelianenko’s ranking is just circumstantial. For right now, Werdum is a better fighter than Emelianenko as evidenced by the actual fight in which Werdum defeated Emelianenko. There’s no would’ves, should’ves, or could’ves to discuss after two fighters fight. Therefore, Werdum must rank above Emelianenko. Similarly, Werdum was knocked out by dos Santos at UFC 90 west of Chicago in October 2008. In an effort to rank fighters presently and not historically, Fighters.com limits the considered record of fighters to their work in the previous two years. Therefore, dos Santos must rank above Werdum who must rank above Emelianenko. That’s Fighters.com’s method and why Emelianenko ranks sixth after losing to Werdum.
Neither seventh-ranked Frank Mir (13-5) nor eighth-ranked “Minotauro” Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (32-6-1) have any scheduled or rumored fights on their calendars.
Though Coker had mentioned rematching tenth-ranked “The Grimm” Brett Rogers (10-2) and former UFC heavyweight champion “Pitbull” Andrei Arlovski (15-8), Fighters.com has confirmed both with Rogers’s camp and Strikeforce that the rematch has never been officially offered to Rogers.

Im sorry but Brett Rogers, Minitaro Nogeria, and Frank Mir do not deserve to be in the Top 10, Overreem should be higher on the list, Fedor should still be top 3, and Junior Dos Santos should be lower, Dos santos has never had anybody even attempt to beat him on the ground, he is just hands, and any good wrestler would destroy him
@Derek
Statement disputed by Werdum losing to Dos Santos.
@Derek
are your new? i’m pretty sure dos santos is a bjj blackbelt from the noguieras gym, he is probably way better at ground then you give him credit for. nog doesn’t just give out black belts to everyone.
Talk about the one fight mentality in rankings, totally dumbfounding; you really think Werdum deserves to be in the top 5 because Fedor got sloppy and put himself in the only position possible where he could lose?
Whats even more dumbfounding is that Carwin doesnt even make the top Dos Santon and Velasquez are ahead of Carwin, if it wasnt for his absolutely terrible conditioning that title is his.. jogging at altitude anyone?
I would always favor Lesnar against Fedor but if Fedor could somehow keep that fight standing he could take Lesnar, Lesnar showed us again how dismal his stand up is on the weekend, was nearly as bad as Carwins conditioning, but not quite.
Lesnar sucks and is a coward… First round ran and curled like a little girl.. Lol
And how pathetic that carwin don’t even have enough endurance to make it in second. If did lesnar would be done.. Lesnar should be ashamed, and calling himself baddest man on the planet? Lol. If lesnar or carwin meet up with overeem or fedor they would be toast..
sorry yoyo but u are full of shit i agree that brock needs mega work on his stand up but look at that uppercut that started it all and lesnar took it all he got caught plain and simple but he was still there to finish the fight he didnt even know where he was till he was on the floor and when u have carwin bashing your skull with his xxxxl fists all u can do is survive and wait to get back to the feet which he did lokk at mir he was worse and he took less than half the beaten that brock took and then there is gonzaga who was out with 1 short right hand so u need to go and learn your mma as anyone who says brock should be ashamed should be shot that is complete nonsense he had a bad round got caught but came back to win and thats what champs are all about i have seen fedor lose many of battles but still gets the w at the end of the fight if u dont like brock fair dos but at least give the man credit when its due he is the only man to take carwins punches and still looked strong at the end of round 1 and thats what a champion is all about coming back from the brink to pull off the impossible and even if carwin wasnt gassed he still would have went to the mat on his back at 1 point with brock on top he was just luck brock went to a sub or it could have ended bad for him but crops to carwin he came to fight and brock knew it but that was a classic fight any1 who says different cant be a fan of mma unless u hate the guys but on an honest note carwin is still o monster and it makes u think what has to be done to beat brock coz his chin is like concrete and he has outstanding cardio and recovery capabilitys wich no other heavyweight possoses at this time brock is the man in the heavyweight so just get used to it fowks as its going to be like that for a while love him or hate him he puts on a show and gets the job done ala fedor he just needs a good camp with good strikers and good sparring to get his stand up where it needs to be to defend a bit better and to set his take downs up a bit better but its his but his chin all i can say is wow. and remember people its only his 6th mma fight .
fedor vs fujita,
fedor was in huge trouble and still got the w.
big nog vs tim sylvia,
nog was in huge trouble in the first and got dominated in the 2nd and at the start of the 3rd then within 20 secs he pulled gaurd got a switch and finished with a gillotine.
and brocks fight was was even better as the opponent was no joke remember people carwin has ko`d all his opponents with much less than what brock took so go and watch all fedors and big nogs fight on line and u will see that surviving has to be done when u get caught all u can do is cover up and wait for your chance it is in no way what so ever a joke and to say they should be ashamed is a joke, they are warriors man thats all there is to it if u dont think so then go and watck pro wrestling and u will get plenty of bull shit in there
How dare anyone compare steroid freak WWF little brock to the greatest MMA fighter. He can’t even be original, calling himself the new emperor. He doesn’t even know what emperor means. The only reason why steroid freak is winning is because of size as a result of anabolic enhancement abuse. He doesn’t have any MMA fighter talent nor class. Just uses force to win fights and this is not what the sport is all about. This wanna be untalented worthless individuals are ruining and corrupting the last pure sport left. Organizations are contracting all of this freaks so they can get rich, presidents have forgotten the pureness of MMA, all they want is $$$. They should have a super heavy weight category for untalented freaks like brock or better yet, he needs to go back to the WWF, the only place on this earth where he belongs. Fyodor Vladimirovich Yemelyanenko is simply the best MMA fighter and everyone else and what they think or say doesn’t matter.
@Orso Bianco
i agree complete with orso. brock lesnar found out what happens when a fighter with equal strength and far superior technique takes him on in the shane carwin fight. too bad shane has no gas tank at all. brock looked like a fucking little child getting spanked in round 1. i still give him credit for surviving such a BEASTING and coming back to win though.
fedor emelianenko is still the greatest MMA fighter on the planet, it’s like everybody wants to take him off the list because they’re tired of seeing him at the top. that much is understandable. but just because he finally thought he actually was invincible and stayed in probably the most dangerous guard of any HW fighter and got caught instead of backing off and picking his shots doesn’t mean he sucks now.
fedor is the shit and will be right back on the top showing everybody why he belongs there, very very very soon.
fedor is going to learn from the loss, and i expect he will probably never lose again. i had a feeling vai cavalo was going to catch him though. he had an air about him going into the fight where he just seemed so calm and sure of himself and i thought fedor would underestimate him. it’s easy to do when you have a record as great as his. i’m surprised it didn’t happen sooner.
actually, i thought he would get knocked out by arlovski. i thought fedor would try to test the superior striker too much and pay for it, but no when he realized arlovski was sharper, he just stayed calm and rope-a-doped him. fucking brilliant! great knockout, a shame for andrei but he’s been known to make bad choices in the ring/cage and pay for it before.
That’s obviously a non-realistic ranking!
Fedor did a minor mistake once in 10 years and now he’s dropped from the 1st place directly to the 6th just for that minor mistake. Lesnar is the #1 but he would get KOd by Overeem in just a few seconds if they fight. Nogueira is completely outgased, he recently achieved a beer guts since he fights in the UFC. Mir is a low quality fighter having no reaction speed, no timing – a very low quality striking and just medium grappling skills. But Mir and Nogueira are ranked above Overeem.
Ha-ha-ha-ha…. Carwin is the only one deserving his place in this top and Velasquez and Dos Santos should be somewhere around him. Honestly, Fedor and Overeem are the best fighters of the moment.
Just look at Lesnar’s standup against Carwin (Carwin is not a top level striker either). Do you really think Brock can stand against Fedor or Overeem?! Do you think Brock can submit them? What brilliant submission skills did he ever proved? What exactly did he ever proved to deserve being ranked #1 up to date??
I’m glad the same people who want to rank Fedor higher also want to rank Alistair higher, because it demonstrates their bias. You could say, “Look at all the great fighters Fedor has beat in his career. He shouldn’t be ranked so low after just one mistake.” That’s a valid argument. That’s not how Fighters.com ranks fighters, but I understand the logic. But, if that’s the logic you’re going to use for your rankings, then Alistair can’t be anywhere near the top. He’s lost 11 fights in his career, including to Werdum. And, who are the great fighters Alistair has beat? The biggest name in his W column is probably Vitor Belfort from five years ago. And, Belfort fights at 185 now while Overeem weighs in at 250 pounds. So, you can’t have it both ways. You can rationalize that Fedor should be ranked higher, but that same reason ranks Alistair lower. Or, you can just tell me who your favorite fighters are, which is really what you’re doing. You’re not ranking anyone on objective criteria. You just like them.
Nice reply Chad, I agree. Its tough when you are a huge fan of some fighters not to be biased. Werdum most certainly earned a spot in the top 10. My list is:
#1-Lesnar
#2-Carwin
#3-Fedor
#4-Velasquez
#5-Dos Santos
#6-Werdum
#7-Nogueira
#8-Overeem
#9-Cro Cop
#10-Nelson
I know many will disagree, but I think if Cro Cop can avenge his losses and get his confidence back he can still truly threaten in he HW division. You watch his pre-Gonzaga fights, count his avg combo stats, he never threw one punch at a time like he does now. If he gets hungry again look out. I know he lost to Dos Santos but I really think he could of won if he still had that confidence to follow up after his straight left. Anyway, can’t wait to see what happens with Dos Santos and Valasquez, to see if they are for real.
Chad, what do you think about Big Nog? In Pride, and even his first couple fights in the UFC, the refs let him get his bell rung, he’d recover mildly and force his opponents closer so he could tap them out. Now though, they are stopping it right away, no more getting punched back into consciousness. I love Big Nog, but I really think he’s done, it’s sad.
Dear Mr Chad,
First of all I need to say that you are right regarding the parameter of subjectivity when we make judgements. For instance, we haven’t seen Velasquez Vs Overeem to judge whether No2 and No9 respectively are fair positions in the List. Neither we have seen Lesnar fighting Fedor. So for one thing we must be certain: That no one is subjective. And Neither are you Mr Chad.
At least we could all agree that minimum 8 out of the 10 fighters mentioned in your list diserve to be in the Top10.
Dear All,
You all know how the world is governed. If one has good relations with the media, he/she can have some have effect (and in some cases control) the public opinion. But we have to be fair. Can anyone tell me an example of a person who sells a product and admits to the consumer that the product is of low quality?…..
Let me think…………Probably nobody…..Why? Because the price would drop and the producer would lose money…..In the end we all know that it is all about money.
So…Mr Chad…You can support your list (for your own reasons) but please show some respect to the readers who read you even though they disagree with you. I assume that you do not say that 95% of the readers who say that Fedor should definitely be minimum No3 are crazy and over-emotional.
Anyway…Keep your minds open…Enjoy the fights…
