A planned rematch for the UFC featherweight title between Jose Aldo and Chad Mendes appears to be off the table.
According to a post on Twitter by the UFC on FOX account, Aldo suffered an injury and will not be able to defend his title at UFC 176 against Mendes. The exact nature of Aldo’s injury has yet to be confirmed.
Aldo (24-1) defeated Mendes in 2012 via knockout, scoring a victory with just a second left in his native country of Brazil. Mendes (16-1) won five straight to earn a rematch in Los Angeles on August 2 at the Staples Center.
We’ll have more as news becomes available regarding the card and timetable for Aldo’s return.
UPDATE: According to Mike Chiappetta, Aldo suffered an injured labrum and herniated cervical disc after falling and hitting his head and shoulder on the floor while training.
