A match-up originally scheduled for March will finally take place on August 18 in the form of a meeting between Strikeforce middleweights Ronaldo Souza and Derek Brunson. The first fight between the two was cancelled after Brunson ran into issues with the Ohio Athletic Commission based on his need for contact lenses.
Brunson-Souza will serve as part of a main card headlined by Strikeforce bantamweight champ Ronda Rousey defending her belt against seasoned veteran Sarah Kaufman. An additional bout between Roger Bowling-Tarec Saffiedine was also confirmed by promotional officials.
Souza is one of the sport’s finest grapplers with a decorated history in BJJ competitions. He holds a 15-3 record in MMA and is a former Strikeforce title-holder with past wins over Robbie Lawler as well as Tim Kennedy.
Comparably, Brunson suffered the first loss of his career earlier this month as a last-minute replacement against Kendall Grove at ShoFights 20. The 9-1 Brunson is 3-0 under the Strikeforce banner.
