Chael Sonnen gave as honest an answer as he could during Wednesday’s episode of “UFC Tonight” when confronted with the prospects of returning to MMA.

Sonnen, who announced his retirement last week following a failed drug test and subsequent suspension from the Nevada Athletic Commission, was originally scheduled to face Vitor Belfort next month.

“I don’t think so,” Sonnen said. “I hope not. I’m most definitely retired. As fighters, we tend to stay in the sport a little too long.

“It’s fun, it’s seductive and it’s all we know, but I’m done.”

Sonnen, who turned 37 in April, last won in August when he submitted Mauricio “Shogun” Rua. He was finished by former UFC light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans in November.

Since 2010, all four of Sonnen’s (28-14-1) losses have come to either former or current UFC champions in Evans, Jon Jones and Anderson Silva – twice.

When asked about the ruling by the NAC regarding his suspension despite being retired, Sonnen cleared that matter up, saying, “there is a protocol that they have to go through, and they will have a hearing that I’ll show up for.

“I won’t defend myself, but I will have a conversation on the topic and on the record and we’ll do that in about a month.”

Both of the banned substances that Sonnen was found to have in his system, he was using to try and help get his wife pregnant, according to the fighter. He previously was allowed testosterone-use exemptions, but the NAC and UFC both banned them earlier this year.
