For Demetrious Johnson, competing inside the Octagon presents him with a skill like no one else.
The reigning UFC flyweight champion will defend his title Saturday night against Ali Bagautinov in the main event of UFC 174. And like previous defenses against John Dodson, John Moraga and Joseph Benavidez, “Mighty Mouse” will rely on that one asset to his advantage.
“He looks like a very durable guy,” said Johnson, during an interview on UFC Tonight. “If I need to beat him up for 25 minutes, I will. The speed advantage, that’s what I’m known for.”
Johnson hasn’t lost since a defeat at the hands of Dominick Cruz for the bantamweight title. He was entered into the UFC’s four-man tournament to crown the first-ever flyweight champion, and has been perfect since winning the belt.
In Bagautinov, he knows this will be another stiff challenge. He is 3-0 since joining the UFC, including a win over Tim Elliott.
“He’s a two-time combat Sambo champion,” Johnson said. “I’m excited to get in there and test my skills against him.
“I always get better working with Matt Hume. After this fight, I’ll be able to talk about things we’ve been working on for this fight. I’ve been with him for two years straight.”
FightLine will have complete coverage of the entire card. You can see the interview with Johnson in the video below.
