Affliction's Trump Card

Posted On: June 4, 2008 at 10:05am

In a press release sent out Tuesday, Affliction announced their partnership with real estate mogul and reality TV star Donald J. Trump, known as “The Donald”.

“We are very excited to be partnering with the most recognized and accomplished business mogul in the world, ” said Tom Atencio, Vice President of Affliction.  “Trump is a true visionary who shares our belief in the future of MMA.”

Exactly what that future is isn’t clear; but, Affliction and “The Donald” will hold a press conference at Noon Thursday in Trump Tower in New York City to flesh out their partnership.

Trump said, “This particular sport resembles my business style of being fast paced, strategic, and aggressive…remembering to never give up.  I am particularly excited to partner with Affliction and become a major player in promotion of MMA, the youngest and fastest growing sport to emerge in the last century.”

Trump has dipped into MMA before.  Fighters.com’s ninth-ranked light heavyweight “Huntington Beach Bad Boy” Tito Ortiz (15-6-1) appeared on Trump’s Celebrity Apprentice reality TV show last year.

Affliction may need Trump’s deep pockets as the total fighter payout for the apparel company’s debut event 19 July in Anaheim, outside of Los Angeles, reportedly exceeds $6 million.

A source confirms to Fighters.com that Affliction is prepared to lose “up to $10 million” in investment to launch a promotion to compete against the UFC.

Wow, I didn’t see this coming! I just checked the date to make sure it wasn’t April fools. Very odd news. Curious to hear what his interest really is in the MMA world.

Donald doesn’t need to know shit about MMA… only believe in it’s future and be willing to back up that belief with cash and business advice. The publicity Affliction will get alone from this move will be worth millions.
