If Jon Jones continues to negotiate and not sign a new deal with the UFC, Daniel Cormier has taken the first step towards creating an interim title fight with Alexander Gustafsson.

Gustafsson has signed on to face Jones for the UFC light heavyweight title, but “Bones” remains unsigned to the planned rematch. Cormier is coming off a win over Dan Henderson that placed him in a position to be a future contender.

“I know this will probably be unpopular. But if (Jones) won’t sign, I’ll fight Alexander Gustafsson,” said Cormier, in an interview with Sports World News. “But it should be for the interim title.”

The rumored Jones-Gustafsson fight is expected to take place in August, which, even though he’s the likely next contender, would leave “DC” on the sidelines for an extended time period. The American Kickboxing Academy fighter called out the champion after his most recent win.

“If they’re putting a belt on the line, I don’t care what date it is,” Cormier said. “It was never about Jones, I just want the title. Besides, it’ll work out better for (Jones); he won’t have to fight both of us.”

Cormier (15-0) is a former U.S. Olympic wrestler who moved down from the heavyweight ranks after his AKA teammate Cain Velasquez reclaimed the UFC heavyweight title.
