Kevin Souza vs. Mark Eddiva

We begin the televised portion of the night with featherweight Kevin Souza and Mark Eddiva.

Souza (14-3) scored a split decision over Felipe Arantes last September and is on a eight-fight win streak. Eddiva (6-0) earned a decision victory over Jumabieke Tuerxun in his debut in March with the UFC, having won all of his previous five fights via finish.

Round 1: Souza with a huge reach advantage at six inches. He’s keeping Eddiva at bay so far, just missing on a huge left hook. Eddiva with a nice counter-right that connected. Eddiva with a nice side kick and he rocks Souza back with another strike. Eddiva drops Souza and is looking to pass, possibly setting up a kimura with three minutes to go. He postures up and lands a nice left-right. Souza hurts him with a combo and Eddiva tries for a takedown, but gets denied. Souza with a huge cut over his right eye and Eddiva is bleeding around the hairline. These two are exciting the Brazilian crowd by just standing and banging. Huge pair of rights land from Souza, who has Eddiva wobbly but he survives.

FightLine scores the round 10-9 for Souza

Round 2: Side-kick from Eddiva lands, as he appears to be a bit refresher after that incredible opening five minutes of striking. Shots to both the outside and inside of the leg from Eddiva, who eats a right-hand for his efforts. Eddiva really picking him apart in this round with strikes and kicks, as he is throwing things in bunches and Souza is only getting off a shot at a time. He shoots for a single-leg and ties Souza up against the fence, landing knees to the thighs. Souza appears to have found his second wind, hammering away with a left-right that nearly drops Eddiva. Another left-right combo and Eddiva might be on dream street. The left-hook has been the best weapon for Souza and he catches Eddiva against the fence. Rights to the head and body by Souza and he is going to get the stoppage victory.

Kevin Souza def. Mark Eddiva via TKO (strikes) at 4:52 of Round 2

Paulo Thiago vs. Gasan Umalatov

Welterweights are up next, as Paulo Thiago squares off with Gasan Umalatov.

Thiago (15-6) has gone just 2-5 in his last seven after back-to-back wins vs. Mike Swick and Jacob Volkmann. He is coming off a submission loss to Brandon Thatch in November.

Umalatov (14-3-1) lost his UFC debut to Neil Magny earlier this year, but does hold nine finishes to his resume.

Round 1: Nice spinning back right off the bat by Umalatov and Thiago answers with his own stiff kick. Another stiff kick from Thiago connects and Umalatov answers this time. Another spinning attack to the chin of Thiago. Umalatov bullies him against the cage, much to the chagrin of the Brazilian faithful. Umalatov trying for a potential choke as we head under a minute left in this opening round. Thiago springs to his feet and gets out, but is tied up against the cage yet again.

FightLine scores the round 10-9 for Umalatov

Round 2: Thiago’s corner told him to be more assertive and it is to start, coming right out after Umalatov. It’s Umalatov, though, that catches him with a left hook and drops Thiago. Umalatov pounces and attacks, forcing Thiago to try for a takedown. He’s on top and looking for a guillotine, but he’s out of position for it and Thiago gets to his feet. Head kick by Thiago, spinning kick from Umalatov and a spinning kick by Thiago all in succession. Thiago ties him up against the fence and is working for a single-leg, but it’s Umalatov who drops down and is in control on the canvas. Umalatov working a guillotine, but Thiago escapes and tries for a takedown, which he gets on a second attempt.

FightLine scores the round 10-9 for Umalatov

Round 3: Very slow, methodical start to the round, as they have both settled in and are looking for an opening to strike. Thiago’s corner wants a takedown in the worst way possible, pleading with him to shoot. We’ve got just 90 seconds left and neither fighter has made a strong push to claim this third and final round. A left from Thiago stuns Umalatov for a brief moment, as he winces. Thiago tries to clinch, but it’s Umalatov who gets the upper-hand. Good finish for Thiago and how the judges viewed the second could be the determining factor.

FightLine scores the round 10-9 for Thiago

Gasan Umalatov def. Paulo Thiago via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)

Chavez shoots again for the takedown, and now that they are apart, the cut appears to be around the mouth. Right hand from Silverio lands and rocks Chavez, followed by a jab. Two straight kicks to the body by Silverio and he is on point with his striking, but eats a left to the nose. Silverio hits him with a kick and has him hurt, as Chavez was almost to the point of doubling over. More knees to the body by Silverio.

Spinning back kick by Silverio lands to the upper arm region of Chavez, and a glancing blow off a head-kick. Good exchange as we go under three minutes left and Silverio goes back to the kicks and jabs. Silverio goes for a takedown, secures it and gets in the hooks. Moments later and this one is all over, as he scores with a rear-naked choke.

FightLine scores the round 10-9 for Magomedov

Round 2: A kickboxing match so far in this round, as both are trying to figure out when and where they can attack. Damm has yet to do much of anything this round, and even commentator Brian Stann is pleading with him to open up the offense. For every one strike thrown by Damm, hit or miss, he’s eating two in return. Damm finally opens up with a minute left, rocking Magomedov with a shot.

FightLine scores the round 10-9 for Magomedov

Round 3: Magomedov fakes the body kick and goes to the head, but it’s just a glancing blow. Damm tries to gain control against the fence with under-hooks, but he’s unable to get the takedown. Magomedov fires off and lands a left with two minutes left in the round. Little more offense from Damm, as he fires off a nice combo. Mini-flurry and Stann wonders if Damm has broke his right hand. Magomedov with a shot to the body that hurts Damm.
