Former UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz hasn’t stepped inside the Octagon to compete since a 2011 decision victory over current flyweight titleholder Demetrious Johnson.

Two knee injuries and a groin issue have kept “The Dominator” from not only competing, but holding onto his title belt.

During a segment on “UFC Tonight” Wednesday, the head coach for Cruz, Eric Del Fierro, stated that his fighter could be back in “two-to-four months.” That, though, is not the issue for Del Fierro.

“I need to keep Dominick limited so his body can handle the workload,” Del Fierro said. “Even if a fight is booked three months from now, he trains so hard, I have to limit (him).”

Cruz (19-1) was scheduled to defend his title against Urijah Faber for a second time after the two were cast as coaches on The Ultimate Fighter. The season was the first live edition of the reality show.

In May 2012, Cruz suffered a torn ACL and was forced out of the main event in July of that year. He underwent surgery, but the cadaver used to repair his ligament rejected his body and he was forced back under the knife.

After recovering once again, Cruz was just weeks away from facing Renan Barao to unify the titles when a groin injury knocked him out of action. The UFC stripped his title and declared Barao the undisputed champion.

Since that time, Barao has lost the belt to T.J. Dillashaw, suffering a TKO loss in the fifth round at UFC 173.
