Boxer Paul Williams paralyzed from waist down after motorcycle accident

It was a rough weekend for boxing fans after those still reeling from the death of Johnny Tapia learned Paul Williams had severed his spinal cord in a motorcycle accident and was left paralyzed from the waist down. The accident came after Williams attempted to avoid an oncoming car and was thrown from his vehicle. Police have since issued a statement saying Williams, who was in the Atlanta area to attend his brother’s wedding, was driving too fast given the road’s conditions.

Williams will undergo surgery tomorrow to help stabilize his spine.

Though the 30-year old champion’s manager told the Associated Press his fighter is in good spirits and expects to take to the ring again it is extremely unlikely according to doctors.

The news marks a sad end to a storied career. Nicknamed “The Punisher”, Williams holds an overall record of 41-2 and was in the process of preparing for a September fight against Saul Alvarez. He currently owns an interim middleweight title in addition to having won belts in the past as a welterweight.
