Former Bellator champion and ex-U.S. Olympic wrestler Ben Askren will make his ONE FC debut later this month, taking on Bakhtiyar Abbasov at ONE FC: Honor and Glory.
The bout will make his first fight for the Asian promotion and it will air on internet pay-per-view.
Recently, Askren embarked on a five-country media tour, heading to the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Cambodia and Singapore to talk about MMA.
“I am super excited to be making my ONE FC debut at the end of this month in Singapore,” Askren said. “MMA is growing so rapidly in Asia and so it’s really fantastic to be able to fight here. I have been training really hard and I can’t wait to be back in the cage to put on a fantastic fight for my fans.”
Askren, 29 years old, signed a six-fight, two-year contract with ONE FC after becoming a free agent. He was still the Bellator welterweight champion when his contract expired following a victory over Andrey Koreshkov.
During his career, “Funky” has scored wins over the likes of Karl Amoussou, current Bellator champion Douglas Lima, Jay Hieron and Lyman Good. Of his 12 career victories, three have come via submission and three more by TKO, including each of his last two.
Askren and Abbasov, who is on a nine-fight win streak of his own, will be the main event. Askren is expected to challenge for the ONE FC welterweight title with a victory over Abbasov.
Abbasov (11-2) is 28 years old and a native of Azerbaijan. He will also be making his debut with ONE FC.
