Costas Philippou admitted after UFC Fight Night 40 that he wasn’t having much fun inside the Octagon with Lorenz Larkin. However, after delivering a finishing blow, he started to enjoy himself a little more. Of course, having your hand raised as the victor makes that a little easier.

Philippou (13-4) earned his first win since 2012 when he landed a right-hand that dropped Larkin. The former Golden Gloves boxer executed his offense perfectly, catching Larkin against the fence and delivering a bone-crushing combination that brought the U.S. Bank Arena crowd to their feet.

“I was worried that Larkin was going to take me down,” he said, during the post-fight show on FOX Sports 1. “He catches guys. It wasn’t really fun until I knocked him out.”

The veteran had lost two straight, falling by TKO to Luke Rockhold and decision to Francis Carmont last year. Those results left him questioning himself going forward, and he also caught the attention of UFC president Dana White negatively.

Philippou, though, got back to his former self. From 2011 until late in 2012, he won five straight, including a finish over Tim Boetsch. He pointed to his trainers after the fight, saying they helped him “find what was missing.”

“Whatever I lost, I found it,” he added. “Last time out, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to keep fighting and it showed. I looked awful. But the UFC called and gave me another shot.”

In Larkin, Philippou stated he “got me with a couple good punches. He was very strong and very fast. My head went numb on one punch he landed.”
