UFC lightweight Gilbert Melendez came close to winning divisional gold last month when he took Benson Henderson to decision at UFC on FOX 7 but was ultimately a scorecard short of receiving the nod. As such, Melendez wants to get back in the contendership mix as soon as possible and take another crack at the championship.
To do so, Melendez is interested in action against one of the top 155ers on the roster so long as it isn’t someone he’s already fought before. “El Nino” offered up his requirements in a recent interview with Knockout Radio where he explained…
“There’s a lot of good guys. Whoever is hot right now. Whoever is the hot dude who is closest to getting that title shot, I’ll take it.”
“If it’s ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone, if it’s the loser between Jose Aldo and Anthony Pettis, if it’s Pat Healy, if it’s Joe Lauzon, Diego Sanchez, who is it? You let me know who will get me quicker to the top, but it would be a good match-up with all these guys.”
“All these people are new faces for me. I just don’t want to fight Josh Thomson or Jorge Masvidal.”
