UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo will face Chad Mendes this summer at UFC 176. Officials confirmed the fight after an initial report by the Los Angeles Times.

Set for August 2, the event will take place inside the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The main card will air on pay-per-view, with prelims set for FOX Sports 1 and Fight Pass.

Aldo (24-1) has defended his title six times, including a 2012 first round knockout victory over Mendes in Brazil. The 27-year-old has followed that win up with defenses over Frankie Edgar, Chan Sung Jung and Ricardo Lamas.

“Scarface” has not lost since a 2005 submission defeat at the hands of Luciano Azebedo in his eighth professional fight. Along with his six UFC title defenses, Aldo also defended the WEC featherweight strap twice.

Mendes (16-1) will be attempting to avenge his only career loss. He has compiled a five-fight win streak since the Aldo defeat, which includes four knockout victories.

The Team Alpha Male fighter finished Cody McKenzie, Yaotzin Meza and Darren Elkins within the first two minutes of the opening round at one point before stopping Clay Guida in the third last year. He finished off 2013 with a decision win over Nik Lentz.

“It’s GAME TIME BABY!!!” Mendes posted on Instagram after news of the fight was confirmed. “Sorry I couldn’t answer any of u back about my next fight but this is why. It’s time to bring that belt back to the U.S. where it belongs!! Please stand with me, support me and let’s do this!!”

No other bouts have been announced for the card, which will see the UFC return to Los Angeles for the first time since 2012. That card aired on FOX.
