Just days ago, Junior dos Santos posted several updates on the status of his most important tools: his hands.
Now, according to multiple reports, the former UFC heavyweight champion has suffered a hand injury and will not be able to face Stipe Miocic later this month at The Ultimate Fighter Brazil 3 Finale. The event is scheduled for May 31 from Sao Paulo.
News of the injury was first reported out of Brazil by Combate. The UFC has confirmed the injury, only stating that they are working to secure a replacement at the moment.
Dos Santos (16-3) posted on Instagram on April 30 that “after another intense day of training, the hands are the ones that suffer, then with physical therapy.” And just a day ago, he posted a picture of himself getting more treatment on his body as he worked towards the Miocic fight.
“Another great job of physiotherapy,” he wrote. “For those who train in high yield physical therapy is really necessary, every day more I realize and understand that.”
Dos Santos is coming off a loss to UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez last October. It was his second defeat to Velasquez. Miocic (11-1) has won five of his six Octagon fights.
The card will include the finals in the TUF Brazil 3 tournaments, along with bouts between Demian Maia and Alexander Yakovlev and Rony Jason and Robbie Peralta. Originally, the event was set to feature Chael Sonnen vs. Wanderlei Silva, as they were the coaches on the reality series. Issues, though, between all sides involved moved that fight to a later date.
