Earlier in the week reporters noted that Cheick Kongo’s profile was removed from the UFC website, and while that doesn’t mean anything in of itself, sources then confirmed with officials that his contract won’t be renewed. It seems like no one is telling Kongo this, as he has taken to facebook to calm down his fans regarding the whole mess. According to Kongo, he just doesn’t have a UFC contract this second, but that will change when they sit down to negotiate. Kongo is 3-2-1 dating back to the fall of 2010, and apparently the UFC is looking for someone who fights more that two times a year in the division. Kongo last fought Roy Nelson at UFC 159 and lost via knockout two minutes into the fight.
Kongo posted on Facebook
“Do not believe everything you are told. I’m in the best position to know about my career in the UFC. And do not worry. For now, know that I have not dismissed the UFC and I’m on good terms with the American organization. I’m out of contract, as I’ve been before. … So I say to you, unless proved otherwise, I’m still a UFC fighter. Take care of yourself.
“Don’t believe he said-she said stories. I have not been cut by the UFC. I am Cheick Kongo so I know best what’s next for me. It doesn’t mean that I am leaving the UFC, it doesn’t mean that I am staying – it means this is my life.”
