UFC President Dana White has said more than once that Lyoto Machida was in live for the next shot at the Jon Jones’ Light Heavyweight crown. However, now that Jones has injured his toe during his UFC 159: Jones Vs Sonnen win over Chael Sonnen, there is a chance he might be on the shelf a while. Machida was that fight on Saturday night Newark, New Jersey, and according to his manager, they sorted out what they would like to do if Jones is out for a long time.
Ed Soares told MMAJunkie:
“We just talked about it last night and this morning on the way home, and basically the way Lyoto feels about it is that if Jon Jones is not going to be able to fight until November or December, then Lyoto would rather take the Alexander Gustafsson fight. If Jon Jones can fight in like August or September, then Lyoto would love to fight for the title.”
“Lyoto wants to stay sharp, and he wants to fight to support his family. Time is going by, and you can never get back time.”
“Your window of opportunity as a fighter is only so much. Lyoto is here to fight. He’s here to do his job, to stay sharp and to compete. If Jon needs time to heal, then we’d love to face Gustafsson.”
