UFC light heavyweight champ Jon Jones exited the Octagon last night at UFC 159 with an easy win over questionable contender Chael Sonnen, pounding him out in the opening round after a number of easily-obtained takedowns. However, Jones also went back to the locker room with the bout’s biggest injury.
Jones broke a big toe shooting in on Sonnen and could have cost him the bout had he not been able to finish Sonnen when he did. The 18-1 divisional king spoke about the situation with Fuel TV after the event, saying he never considered backing down despite the injury and would have kept going as long as his body (or officials) would let him.
“I don’t know. Late in the round, I was springing forward. I thought my foot got caught in a hole in the mat. When the fight was over, I looked down and I saw the blood. It’s all good. The big toe isn’t going to slow me down.”
“With my coaching staff, they wouldn’t allow me to dwell on it. They would have twisted it and sent me back out to fight. I just want to be a warrior.”
