Max Holloway and Andre Fili were likely knotted up at one round each heading to the third Saturday night at UFC 172.

Holloway didn’t let it get to the judges, locking up a guillotine and forcing Fili to tap, earning his ninth career win.

For Holloway (9-3), it was an emotional week, as he lost his grandfather on Tuesday.

“What happened this week, I went through a lot,” he said. “I felt like (his grandfather) was up (looking down on me).”

The Hawaiian rocked the Team Alpha Male prospect with a series of strikes before going right for the choke. It was his first submission victory of his career and the fifth UFC win.

“I needed a finish,” he said. “If I got a submission, (my coach) said he would buy me a box of Krispy Kremes. He’s gotta pay up.”

Holloway stated that he had been working on the guillotine choke since a 2013 loss to Dennis Bermudez. He has now won two in a row, including a January TKO over Will Chope.

The loss snapped a nine-fight win streak for Fili (13-2). His only other loss came in 2010 via TKO after suffering a knee injury competing on the regional scene.
