While many in the MMA community have written off UFC heavyweight Alistair Overeem in light of his failed drug test for testosterone use and sketchy explanation it seems the hulking Dutchman has at least one person in his corner willing to express support publicly – Frank Mir.
Mir, who ultimately took Overeem’s spot in a title-fight at UFC 146, had his peer’s back this week when asked about the situation on UFC Tonight where he expressed his belief that everyone deserves a second chance.
“This is the first time that he’s ever come up positive in a test as far as I’m aware of,” began Mir on the topic.
“Everybody makes mistakes,” the former heavyweight champion continued. “We all do things we’re not proud and we’ve all made mistakes professionally, or even our personal lives, that are not our greatest moments in life. And to sit there and ostracize somebody and never allow them to redeem themselves would be very against humanity.”
Overeem was denied a conditional license at a NSAC hearing yesterday and will be unable to apply again until December 27, 2012.
