The domino effect from UFC heavyweight Alistair Overeem’s failed drug test continued over the weekend after already initially producing a change to the Dutchman’s scheduled scrap with divisional champion Junior dos Santos at UFC 146. While Frank Mir will fill in for Overeem, the former title-holder’s original opponent – Cain Velasquez – is now set to face Antonio Silva in co-headlining action at the same event.
News of Silva’s status was confirmed on Twitter by UFC President Dana White.
The 16-3 Brazilian hasn’t fought since September due to injury but was impressive prior to the break while part of the Strikeforce roster including success against Andrei Arlovski and Fedor Emelianenko. Interestingly enough, his last outing involved a loss to Daniel Cormier who is a training partner and close friend of Velasquez’s.
No word was mentioned regarding Roy Nelson who was supposed to fight Silva and has since been left without an adversary at UFC 146 based on this weekend’s news.
