UFC 159: Jones Vs Sonnen Live Results and Play-By-Play

The match that could have saved UFC 151 is finally here, Defending Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones will put his belt on the line against Chael Sonnen at UFC 159: Jones Vs Sonnen this weekend in New Jersey. Sonnen might have won all the prizes on this past season of The Ultimate Fighter 17, but there is only one prize matters to the champion. In the co-main event, Alan Belcher and Michael Bisping will meet in a middleweight showdown that could have possible title implications later in the year.

Kurt Holobaugh vs. Steven Siler

Round 1(ref: Gasper Oliver)

Holobaugh takes the center and he looks anxious to get going. Siler is already throwing alot of kicks and a lot of feints. They clinch up, and Siler hooks up the thai clinch. Holobaugh comes forward throwing body kicks, and Siler gives him some chin music.Siler gets the thai clinch again, and Holobaugh is working the body. Siler uses it to take down Holobaugh and now he takes his back. Siler is landiing some shots from the back, and he is tstaying tight. . Holobaugh gets to his feet. Siler rolls it to the ground, and he tightens up the rnc. Holobaugh doesn, tap, and Siler lets go. Still on his back, he ends it riding his back pounding on him.

Round 2
Holobaugh takes the center again, and Siler dives in for a takedown. Holobaugh gets a hold of his neck, but Siler scrambles out. Siler backs out, and in a scramble Holobaugh ends up on top. Siler uses the de la riva to sweep. They pop up and Holobaugh lands a big elbow that looks to hurt Siler, but Siler ends up on the bottom in the scramble and Holobaugh is landing viscous ground and pound. Siler is landing some upkicks, and Holobaugh lets him up. Both fighters are exchanging and we have a fight. Siler lands a solid hook, and shoots in but ends up on the bottom.

Siler is coming forward but Holobaugh isn’t going anywhere. Holobaugh is landing some big leg kicks, but Siler comes forward and lands some solid combinations. He backs up Holobaugh on the fence, and he turns it around and Siler is on the cage. Back and forth on the fence, and the ref is threatening to break them up. Holobaugh landing some body shots but not much on them. They separate and Siler lands a bg left hook. Holobaugh went for a throw, and in the scramble Siler mounts Holobaugh. Holobaugh gives up his back, and laces up the body triangle. Sileris pounding on him and riding the round out.

Leonard Garcia vs. Cody McKenzie

McKenzie takes the center quick, and he dives in for the leg of Garcia and gets the takedown. Garcia stands up and McKenzie takes his back and pulls him down. McKenzie takes the back fully and sinks in the hooks, and moves it to a body triangle. They are hand fighting and McKenzie is landing some decent shots from the back. McKenzie is just pound on Garcia, Garcia scrambles out, and McKenzie ends up on top in full guard. Garcia scrambles up and ends in a body triangle as the horn sounds. one way traffic.

McKenzie circling, and Garcia is looking to throw. McKenzie dives for a leg and doesn’t get it, but in a scramble he ends up on top of Garcia against the fence. Garcia almost gets up, and then scrambles out. Garcia lands a solid kick. McKenzie soots, and Garcia grabs the neck, but he won’t get it. McKenzie takes the back of Garcia and pulls him down, and tightens up the triangle to the body. McKenzie is starting to land more and more punches and the ref threatens to take a point for grabbing the glove. One way traffic.

Garcia takes the center, and throws a head kick. Garcia is swinging for the fences, and McKenzie dives for the ankle. He doesn’t get it, and McKenzie is doing well to protect himself. Garcia lands a nice right hand, and McKenzie closes in and lands a body kick of his own. Garcia is doing much better in this round as he is stuffing these takedowns. McKenzie lands a big left hand, and Garcia answers with a right. Garcia throws a nice body kick, but he is missing on a lot of punches. McKenzie still coming forward, and landing some strikes. McKenzie lands a solid left hand after Garcia misses with a kick, and he gets the takedown and is in ½ guard. Round ends with McKenzie in back mount.

Johnny Bedford vs. Bryan Caraway
Round 1(ref: Keith Peterson )
Caraway takes the center, and lands a hook right away. Bedford lands a nice one-two, and Caraway is clearly trying to get the fight down. Bedford lands a nice straight right, and Caraway is looking to land that hook again. Bedford lands a nice right hook coming in. Caraway slips a punch, and ends up getting the back of Bedford and pulls him down. Caraway looking for the rear naked choke, but Bedford doing well. Bedford gets up, and lands a kick. Caraway eats two huge shots, but he looks ok. Bedford is findng a home for these combinations, and Caraway throws a head kick that misses. Bedford lands a solid 3 punch combination, and it prompts Caraway to shoot in for the takedown. He gets it and the round ends.

Bedford starts circling, and Caraway shoots in and gets stuffed. Bedford is swinging for the fences, and Caraway is doing good to stick and more. Bedford lands a solid knee to the body and a right hand. Bedford lands a solid leg kick. Bedford is landing a right hand, low kick combination that is paying dividends. Caraway lands a left hand, and Bedford answers with a 1-2 and looked for the clinch. Caraway gets the double leg, and he moves to ½ guard. Caraway moves to sidemount, and is doing well to use short elbows.

Bedford coming forward looking to land the right hand, and Caraway is coming forward. Bedford lands a nice hook, but misses with three other strikes. Both fighters exchanging, but neither landing much. Caraway shoots in for the takedown, and gets it. Bedford rolls for a triangle and armbar chain, but gets neither. Caraway moves to ½ guard, and he is landing some strikes, but not many. Caraway locks up the neck, rolls over the choke, but Bedford survives. Caraway steps over, and laces it in mount and gets the tap.

Sheila Gaff vs. Sara McMann
Round 1(ref: Gasper Oliver)
Gaff runs forward, and McMann quickly takes her down. Gaff is doing well to tie her up. Gaff is doing well tying her up. McMann landing some short body shots and hammer fists. McMann lands some solid shots to the body, but she isn’t even attempting to pass the guard. Ref stands them, McMann is shooting but Gaff is stuffing very well and landing big knees. In the scramble, McMann moves to a top position and moves to side mount. She gets the mounted crucifix and pounds out Gaff.

St. Preux takes the center, and starts throwing kicks. Villante lands a low one of his own. Villante grabs a leg, and shoots in for the takedown. Villante almost has it, but St. Preux grabs the cage. NO warning. St. Preux looking to open up with the hands, but it looks like he is having  a hard time pulling the trigger. St. Preux lands a nice combination, and Villante lands a nice head kick. St. Preux swarms Villante and is lighting him up, at least seven shots, and backs him on the fence. They split, St. Preux is landing his right hook really wide, but its landing hard. Villante answers back, and they clinch on the fence. Villante just can’t get the fight down. St. Preux shoots in for the takedown, but gets stuffed. Villante lands a big elbow on the break. St. Preux lands a nice one two.

Villante takes the center, and lands a leg kick that trips up St. Preux. St. Preux lands a nice body kick. St. Preux has no problem exchanging kicks if thats what Villante wants to do. St. Preux lands a nice 1-2, and then a left to the body. Villante staying on these leg kicks, and St. Preux is slowing down a bit. St. Preux shoots in on telegraphed shot, and Villante lands nicely on the break. St. Preux looking real tired right now. Villante landing more leg kicks, and St. Preux is barely throwing punches. St. Preux lands a nice left, but neither are landing, or really throwing anything. Villante lands a hook as the round ends.

Villante takes the center, and St. Preux lands a mean straight right. St. Preux lands a hook, and St. Preux pokes Villante in the eye. Villante tells the ref he couldn’t see, and to give him a second. The ref stops the fight… how ridiculous.

Khabilov takes the center and Medeiros jumps in with a hook. Medeiros is doing very well of dancing on the outside. Medeiros lands a nice low kick, and then lands a right hand. Khabilov lands a straight right to the body. Khabilov is starting to wake and is throwing a little but more. Medeiros is doing a good job at throwing feints. Khabilov catchs a kick, pulls Medeiros down, and takes his back. They scramble, and they pop up. Medeiros waves to the ref, and they stop the fight. Medeiros has a broken thumb. The hell?

Pat Healy vs. Jim Miller
Round 1(ref: Herb Dean)

Healy coming forward early, and Miller lands a solid body shot. Miller seems to have Healy figured out early, and is landing big shots. Miller is pushing around Healy, but Healy is coming forward. Miller lands a solid kick, and Healy lands a hook and throws a kick. Miller uses it to take down Healy. Miller goes to work from guard, and Miller is framing up an armbar in a scramble, and Healy gets out and up. Healy lands a nice knee, but Miller lands a low kicks. Healy gets the takedown, and Miller rolls for a knee and eats punches. Healy is taking his back, and he gets up for second and gets taken down. Miller ends the round pounding on Healy, and Healy was saved by the bell.

Healy’s right eye is messed up. Miller lands a nice hook, and Healy gets the clinch. Healy almost gets the takedown, but now they break up. Miller lands a solid leg kick, and then muscles Healy on the fence. Miller lands a big elbow, and Healy gets the takedown. Healy lands some GnP, but Miller retains guard. Both fighters are landing elbows. Healy is landing some nice GnP, and is marking up Miller. Miller scrambles up, and Healy is taking his back as he gets up. Healy almosts has a RNC, but Miller scrambles and gets to the top. Round ends with Miller being muscled on the fence.

Healy takes the center, and Miller lands a hook. They scramble and Healy almosts gets the takedown. Healy coming frward, but Miller is marking up Healy. Healy comes through and is pressing Miller on the fence. Healy gets the takedown, and is landing elbows from ½ guard. Healy is framing up an arm triangle, but Miller escapes. Healy is just muscling Miller on the fence and landing GnP. Healy takes the back, and laces up a rear naked choke, and chokes out Miller. Damn.

Phil Davis vs. Vinny Magalhaes

Round 1(ref: Dan Miragliotta)

Davis takes the center, and Magalhaes throws a high kick. Davis is looking to land the striahgt right, and its getting through. Davis pushes Magalhaes on the fence, but they break off. Davis back to the center, and Davis is landing on Magalhaes. Davis lands a high kick, and Davis is picking apart Magalhaes. Davis is really putting together his combinations nice. Magalhaes drags Davis to the ground, and almost has his back. Davis escapes, and makes Magalhaes gets up. Davis coming forward, and Magalhaes drops his hands for a second. Thats not good. Magalhaes lands a nice  uppercut, but Davis is peppering Magalhaes. Magalhaes is complaining of an eye poke, but ref didn’t see it. Davis really putting hands Magalhaes, but so far hasn’t hurt him again.

Magalhaes takes the center, and his corner told him to throw first. Magalhaes lands a nice right hand, and Magalhaes is coming forward. Davis lands a front kick to the body. Davis is doing a good job of sticking and moving. Davis takes down Magalhaes, and then he let him up. Davis lands a solid one two, and Magalhaes is flat footed now. Magalhaes lands a nice low kick, but Davis answers with a stiff combination. Magalhaes really working the legs. Davis is doing a Nick Diaz impression here with his puch accumulation. Over and over, walking him down, pop…pop! Magalhaes sometimes landing, but his corner is pleading with him to fire back. Davis working the body now, and is going to town on Magalhaes, and I’m surprised how durable Magalhaes is right now. Davis ends the round picking Magalhaes to pieces.

Davis again throwing early, but Magalhaes is a little bit more awake and is throwing back. Davis is landing a solid one two that he is setting up effortlessly. Davis is really just piling up the offense, and Magalhaes attempts to pull guard but Davis isn’t having it. Davis is playing wit his food, and lands a solid front kick and left-right right behind it. Magalhaes is being more active, and is sometimes firing back, but there is no mustard on these punches. Davis is also using his reach really well. Magalhaes dives for an ankle, but doesn’t get it. End of the round, and Magalhaes is showing no signs of life. Davis peppering him up, and getting the win. Davis outstrikes him in the fight 105 too 48.

Cheick Kongo vs. Roy Nelson

Nelson takes the center, and Kongo is circling. Nelson clinches on the fence. Kongo landing some short knees. Nelson gets the body lock, but Kongo defending the take down well. Ref breaks them up. Nelson coming forward, and Kongo is on his bike. Nelson lands a huge right hand, and Kongo stumbles to the ground. Kongo goes to get up an Nelson ices him, and Kongo face plants.

Alan Belcher vs. Michael Bisping
Round 1 (Ref. Herb Dean)
Belcher circling, and Bisping takes the center. Feeling out begins. Belcher lands a nice body kick, and Bisping is coming forward now. Belcher lands a side kick, and Bisping is still on the outside. Bisping lands a combination, and Belcher lands a body kick. Bisping working the low kicks. Bisping looking to land, but is only throwing one at a time. Belcher lands a nice left hand. Bisping lands a nice combination. Then a right hand from Bisping, and then another on the temple. Belcher fires back with one of his own. Belcher lands a nice right hand, but he has his hands low. We have another eye poke. Back at it. Bisping lands a nice combo, and Belcher slips. Bisping lands a few at the end, and the bell goes off.

Round 2

Bisping being backed up early. Belcher lands a few, but Bisping fires back. Bisping is  moving really well, but this is a close fight. Bisping lands a nice leg kick, and then follows with a high kick that grazed Belcher. Belcher is coming forward, but Bisping is doing very good job of planting and firing back. Belcher whiffs on a right hand,  and Bisping counters with a one-two. Then a nice right hand from Bisping. Belcher is having a hard time of figuring out Bisping. Booth fighters doing a lot of missing. Both land nice right hands. Bisping lands a nice 12 very flush,and Belcher eats them. Belcher lands a nice left hook, and then right hand.

Belcher coming forward, and is coming forward and throwing. Bisping returning fire, but Belcher is in there trading. Belcher lands a nice right hand, but Bisping fires back with some body work. Bisping lands a fast hook, but Belcher is just biting down on his mouth piece and is coming forward. Bisping is really picking apart Belcher, and his corner is  yelling for him to let it go. Bisping is just still planting and firing back. Belcher still has his hands down, and its being stupid. Bisping lands two big right hands. Bisping is really turning it on, and Belcher is barely firing back. Belcher shoots, and Bisping puts him on the fence. Bisping looks really fresh, and he lands a nice counter right hand. Belcher takes a finger to the eye. Belcher’s eye is really messed  up… man what a weird night.

Jon Jones Vs. Chael Sonnen

Round 1(ref: Keith Peterson)

Sonnen runs to the middle and Jones gets the takedown, but he gets up. Jones muscles Sonnen on the fence. Jones is landiing shots on the insed, and  gets a takedown. Jones lands a big elbow. Sonnen gets up, but Jones still has a body lock. JOnes pressing Sonnen on the fence, and he lands a spinning elbow. Big takedown from Jones. He goes back to the elbows, and Chael is flat on his back. Jones is just beating him on the ground, body / head. Jones has Sonnen’s arm pinned, and now Jones is swarming. Jones goes brutal elbows and a knee to the body and Sonnen is a mess. Chael is protesting, but this fight was done.
