When Alexander Gustafsson was removed from the UFC On Fuel 9 bout with Gregard Mousasi, the clearly upset fighter began saying he would like to fight Lyoto Machida next to see who fight the winner of the main event at UFC 159: Jones Vs Sonnen. Machida was told before his last two fights that he was victorious he would get another title shot, and even UFC President Dana White has noted that the Machida is next in line for the belt. In this day and age, you can’t blame Gustafsson for trying, but Machida’s manager clearly has no intention of even entertaining the idea of a possible bout.
Machida’s manager Jorge Guimaraes told Lance!Net:
“Lyoto is on stand-by list waiting for the winner of Jon Jones vs Chael Sonnen. I think it is almost impossible for Chael to win this bout but anything may happen. A fight is a fight but it has already been scheduled, there’s no doubt about it.”
“Lyoto is the number one contender and he is only waiting to see who is going to be the winner of this fight. He is not convinced about Jones, he is not convinced from that loss, and wants to test Jones.”
“The fight between Jones and Sonnen is going to happen now, it doesn’t make sense to fight Alexander. We’re almost there. If it were a little before, this fight could have already happened, but he just fought… and Dana White has said that Lyoto is the number one. We’ll be waiting.”
