Former Strikeforce women’s champion Sarah Kaufman believes after she defeats Leslie Smith Wednesday night at The Ultimate Fighter Nations Finale, she’ll be on the cusp of contending for the UFC title.
Kaufman (16-2) is on her third opponent for the card. She was originally scheduled to meet Shayna Baszler, who was injured and replaced by Amanda Nunes. However, Nunes was hurt just days later and a rematch from their Invicta FC days with Smith (6-4-1) was set.
“I would love for this win to push and propel me to fight on the Vancouver (UFC 174) card,” said Kaufman, during a recent interview with MMAjunkie.com. “I want to have a strong win, get a knockout, put some money in my pocket, turn around into another fight camp and then fight in front of literally my home crowd in Vancouver.”
As for her exact opponent, Kaufman believes that could come this weekend when Miesha Tate meets Liz Carmouche, though she was quick to point out there is no “looking at anyone past Leslie.”
“I do think a fight with Miesha or Liz would be a great opponent,” she said. “It would make sense in terms of the rankings and in terms of our standing with the UFC.”
