Are UFC Champ Anderson Silva's Title Defense Antics On Purpose?

Posted On: April 11, 2010 at 11:05pm
Are UFC Champ Anderson Silva

After Fighters.com and UFC middleweight champion “Spider” Anderson Silva‘s (25-4) strange performance in a five-round unanimous decision over Demian Maia (11-2) at UFC 112 in Abu Dhabi Saturday, UFC President Dana White was clear with his disgust at the Brazilian he’s promoted as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world.

“I don’t know what I’m going to do to him right now,” White told the post-fight press conference.  “I don’t know.  I honestly don’t know what to say.  I’m so blown away and disgusted and saddened.”

But, Fighters.com thinks both White and Silva are being coy about the origin of Silva’s antics when defending his 185-pound title.  There’s a quiet war going on between White and Silva behind the scenes and it’s all about Silva boxing legendary boxer Roy Jones, Jr.

Recall that after Silva beat former PRIDE middleweight champion and third-ranked “Hollywood” Dan Henderson (25-7), Silva began to publicly talk about purusing his dream of boxing Jones.  White, though, assured Silva and the public that he would kaybash any matchup between Silva and Jones under Marquess of Queensberry rules.

Starting with his next title defense versus “Predator” Patrick Cote (13-5) at UFC 90 in Chicago in October 2008 and through his defenses versus Thales Leites (16-3) at UFC 97 in Montreal in April 2009 and Maia Saturday, Silva’s title defenses have been full of antics and disappointment.  After each, Silva has apologized and promised MMA fans a better performance next time, as he did Saturday.

Fighters.com suspects Silva is intentionally sabotaging his UFC title defenses and White knows it.  That’s why White couldn’t sit through the entire main event in Abu Dhabi.

But, what about Silva’s devastating first-round knockouts in light heavyweight matchups versus “Sandman” James Irvin (14-6) and Fighters.com fifth-ranked light heavyweight Forrest Griffin (17-6)? Exactly!  Those are the exceptions that convince Fighters.com that Silva’s performances at middleweight are intentional.

Fighters.com has previously reported that Silva’s UFC contract is written such that if Silva retires as a UFC champion, he’s essentially perpetually bound to the UFC if he ever wants to fight again in any combat sport.  So, even if Silva retired as UFC champion, White can veto a Silva-Jones boxing matchup.  And, Silva can’t voluntarily vacate his title under his contract, nor can he practically throw a fight without ruining his reputation and any potential Silva-Jones boxing match.  Silva has to legitimately lose at middleweight before he could retire and box Jones, but a loss would also kaybash the Silva-Jones matchup.  Catch-22!

Fighters.com thinks Silva’s antics in his last three title defenses is Silva’s plea to White to let him vacate the 185-pound title so he can retire and box Jones.

Fighters.com can’t read Silva’s mind, of course.  But, the facts reported here have been verified by sources.  With those, Fighters.com is just putting two and two together.

    Wow thanks for informing me fellas, I can’t believe White won’t let Silva and Jones Jr. box. I mean first of all Jones’ is too late in his career to be challenging a UFC middleweight champion and his people probably wouldn’t allow it. But if they did that’s a mega payday for both Jones and Dana White and Anderson gets his dream. So Dana is kind of being a dick here to Silva and in my eyes Silva is just doing that Floyd Mayweather bullshit because he’s seen them do it in boxing and get away with it and even get bragged on so he figures he’ll just be the “roy jones ” of MMA. While seeking vengeance on Dana. If you asked me I’d say this whole situation is pretty ridiculous. And honestly Silva will showboat with the wrong opponent and I believe lose his title and retire. As for Dana, he’s the big boss of the UFC and has to be a dick right now

    I totally agree with your assessment. This was apparent after the Patrick Cote & Thales Leites fights. After the Leites fight I told everyone in the room that the UFC would never let an Anderson Silva fight be the only main event but he would be regulated to “co-main events”. So far that prediction has come true. I now think he will never be booked as the last fight for a show unless it is a SpikeTV fight night event.

    Wow. Koudos to you guys for being intelligent. Your hypothesis that Silva is trying to get out of his contract feels more like the truth than any other theory or “reactions” I’ve read or heard so far. If it’s true that Silva is trying to get out of his “Catch 22″ contract, then everyone (including Dana White) is reacting exactly like the way he wants them to . If your theory is true, and Silva is fired (which I’m guessing would negate his contract and free him to fight Roy Jones Jr), than not only is Silva a superb fighter, he is far more intelligent than Dana White or the angry mob put together. Those idiots. They don’t even know that they’re being played like puppets. If your theory turns out to be true, I tip my hats off to both Anderson Silva and whoever came up with the hypothesis in your company. Nice work.

    Watching Spider doesn’t interest me, this was the first pay per view I didn’t bother with in a long long time. Why? BECAUSE spider’s not a champ I care to watch, he is not in the fight to win with his heart, he doesn’t fight for the thrill of the fight, he has a personal agenda, and that is to statisfy his sick ego, in other words, he is a goof.

    yeah, definitely I think this is an issue of personal pride. silva is the hands down the greatest ufc champion. he has the record for the most title defenses and he can most likely take a belt in one or two more weight classes in my opinion. for some guy who’s been cashing out millions of dollars off this guy to not let him carry out his dream of fighting roy jones jr. in a boxing match, is probably pissing the crap out of silva. For whatever reason, Dana White refused this fight in the same manner that he refused Fedor’s ability to fight sambo if he signed with the UFC. honestly, dana should just give these superstars a break. they put their neck out on the line so many times, doing whatever dana tells them to do. dana’s already made a ton of money off silva. i say just give him what he wants.

    I agree 100%. Anderson is no dummy. He did what he did for a reason. Demian had no business being in a title fight vs Anderson. Anderson needs to move down, beat GSP then move up to Light Heavy. I really hope Dana doesn’t take the GSP fight away from him, but I have a feeling he will if he didn’t already.

    Wow, this is a really different take on Silva’s possible motives for his past 3 lackluster performances at MW. I’ve gotta say though, it seems like a pretty big stretch for me. Is he *really* willing to bite the hand that feeds him so well just to pursue a boxing match with Roy Jones?? And if so, why all the taunting and showboating? Why not just dance and jab for 5 rounds? Either way, refreshing take. Good article.

    are you being serious…. a loss for Silva would make no difference to a Jones
    boxing fight…. If you think losses should make any difference then surely the
    recent spanking Jones got from Hopkins would ruin this fight ever taking place !?

    Jones should retire, if Silva wants to try his boxing skills he should seek out a younger
    fighter, because Jones’ reflexes have been shown to be wanting…

    Silva’s taking a chance. A chance of brutally destroying his reputation as a fighter. Regardless of anything that goes on behind closed doors, he has a contract to fulfill. As with all fighters (as well as athletes in other sports), he wasn’t forced to sign. He made that choice. Now he has an obligation to White and UFC fans. He’s acting as immature as a spoiled child trying to get his way. If he wants to showboat, I’m sure the WWE is hiring!

    1. I think Maia insulted him and he got really really mad so he disrespected him in the ring – people need to understand Brazilian racial politics better before they set fights… see the recent translations of what Spider said “e.g. playboy”

    2. I tihnk Spider taunts fighters to get them to come out and fight him. Remember that Maia was the one backing up most of the fight. He threw no punches until the end. Just failed shooting attempts. So Spider is criticized for not acting like a wild man chasing him around teh ring? He literally put his chin out there for 3 rounds. Then he probably got tired.. bored.. or merciful.

    3. He’s the champ. If White doesnt like it, he should learn to fight. You dont like showboating? Find someone who can beat him who wont. Otherwise pay him his due. He’s the king and the Octagon is his Kingdom. Maybe you should teach more showboating if it makes better fighters like Spider.

    4. If you really want to punish him.. make him fight Mashida. But I dont think he will hurt his friend. I think he will let himself lose first.

    5. If you want a fight, get him GSP or Shogun, or Rampage NOW. He will destroy those guys out of anger for the way he’s being treated by his so called loyal fans.

    oh yeah… and i hear UFC doesnt pay fighters that well either.. $50k fightnight bonus? Isn’t he making multi-millions per event? And that’s supposed to be the bonus? You can get a bonus like that without risking your life.

    That’s why Fedor wont fight UFC I think. So Dana is to blame. If he wasn’t too cheap to pay Fedor, he wouldnt have to hold Spider (his only undisputed GOAT) from his dreams.

    I’m curious to know how Maia disrespected Silva. As far as I know, he didn’t. Silva can’t come up with any legit excuse for his actions so he came up with a bullshit one. It didn’t seem like Silva had any beef w/ Maia coming into this fight, otherwise it would’ve been told. When specifically asked HOW Maia disrespected him, Silva couldn’t give a straight answer. Just started rambling on about Chris Leben..?

    I’d like to see Silva vs. Jon Jones.

    Anderson should be immediately stripped of his belt and released from his Contract. I’ve ordered every UFC Event since UFC 100 and this event took the fucking cake as the biggest main event letdown since I watched Shogun lose in decision to that pussy ass Machida. Anderson is not a true champ. That was not a title defense. It was great to see Maia crack Silva with a couple good shots, and what does the so called greatest P4P fighter in the world do, RUN LIKE THE BITCH HE IS! Anderson ‘The Pussy’ Silva wouldn’t stand a CHANCE in that octagon with the likes of G.S.P., Brock Lesnar or Junior Dos Santos. EVER! They would squish the spider like the insignificant annoyance that he has become. FUCK Silva. I bet I could kick his little jiving, monkey ass myself. Fucking Punk.

Anderson Silva would fuckin destroy any welterweight, middleweight, light-heavyweight, and a shitload of legitimate heavyweights including Junior Dos Santos. And what’s with the “jiving, monkey ass” shit you’re fuckin spewing, you think nobody sees through your racist bullshit you fuckin faggot. Stay the fuck off this forum you whiny lil’ bitch and stop talkin shit about the best P4P fighter in the world. Fuckin asshole.

    @Bean
    You’re absolutely right! Anyone who “fights” the way Silva did isn’t a true champ. I, too, think he should be stripped of his belt. He should, on the other hand, be forced to fulfill his contract. If he’s released, he’ll have his way through whining and crying.

    @Joe
    UFC does pay their fighters well. The bonuses you’re speaking of are just that…bonuses. That’s money they recieve on top of their contract pay.

    @Whoever really gives a flying…
    Again I say, no fighter is forced to sign a contract. They’re made an offer on that contract. If they sign, they accepted. Period. There are obligations on that contract. Obligations on the side of the UFC and obligations on the side of the fighter.

    @Sang
    I’m puzzled with that one, too. I’ve yet to find where Maia disrespected Silva. It was just a desperate attempt to try to justify his lousy performance. If Maia disrespected him by saying, “I’m going to win!” then I guess nearly every fighter has disrespected their opponent at one time or another.

    Why are they blaming this on Silva? I agree that he should have finished the fight but its not his job to push the action. Maia didn’t do shit. He was obviously scared to punch him and his only move was to try and take Silva down which failed. I hope the GSP-Silva fight goes through so Silva could shut all those dumbass GSP fans up.

    Most of these “Mixed Martial Artists” are purely one dimensional. They are anything but mixed just like Maia. If they were truely mixed they would be just as dangerous standing up as they are on the ground just like Silva. Silva is probably the smartest stand up fighters in the UFC. GSP wishes he could do waht Silva does standing up. Only a person who does alot of stand up martial arts would appreciate how technical Silva is. The only guys I watch are Cung Le, Silva, and sometimes Machida just for that reason.

    Right, The fght was a complete joke and Silva could of ended it it in the first 2 rounds.

    There is 100% something dodgy behind the scenes going on, but I don’t know what, but it seems he is trying to get out of his contract with the UFC for WHATEVER reason (another promoter to gt away fromDana, take up a dancing career, had enough of no competition in UFC > doubt it, but you never know).

    People quick to say this guy at this weight would beat silva- but why does the world expect silva to fight between 3 weight classses? why do guys never come to his weight to fight – a little unfair – others should try and prove themselves not the champion be chasing anyone half decent to fight (even though he has not behaved or given example like one recently!)

    I still think he is one of the best fighters that I have seen his over the last 6 years of following MMA BUT even with arguments with UFC, he should of been a PROFESSIONAL and given his all and alos been a GENTLEMAN – I donl;t think Mia should take it personal (IF possible) – it is an excuse for trying to fuck Dana over – he can’t just say nothing – Dana may of even told Silva to say that shit!!

    Also Dana is sefish and favors the wreckless fighters anyway (although I love Clay Guida!), “never leave it to the judges”, “go out there, go for it, never stop, have heart” becasue he wants exciting fights all the time – if you are fighting someone more skilled sometimes you have to sue strategey, what is wrong with that?

    In the nature of any sport you get some exciting and some boring ass times, but it is hard to do all the time (grapple borefests in MMA do my head in, but again one of the fighters may be trying to edge a fight they might lose 99% of time on their feet with that fighter) – back to Silva cos I’m going off point a little, he could of made this exciting and quick and shown the UFC off to the UAE and new invester, but he was set on his mission to do UFC/DANA the most amount of damage possible for this event in new part of the world. Guarentee’d.

    Lack of kotivation idea doesn;t 100% work with me either – he still does a full training camp, just not to fight?

    he willinging signed a contract” doesn’t alway wash as was some time ago (correct me if I’m wrong)

    In terms of cash for a figher that may only get between 1-4 UFC fights a year, I don’t think the pay is great compared to what they take off them, hecne endorsements, merchandice, open their own gyms – money is not great. Would love to see a fortnightlty UFC fight night for up and coming giys and a monthly UFC (we have been spoilt recently I appreciate) – so many MMA fighters, they dont always get a shot or crack 9dont get me onto Brock the cok for gods sack!). GOING ON TRACK AGAIN (sorry)

    Definately fishy things boys and girls…

    - DO I still like/rate Silva – hell yeah

    - Did he do wrong – yes and no – unprofessional, let fans down but if I was a disgruntled employee I may feel the same/take some action ”

    PERSONALLY seeing the Dana video’s would love to see a camera in that trailer after the figt that night, I reckon Anderson continued to dance around, while Dana tried to punch him!

    SILVA won the battle with Dana that night, but think the WAR may now unfortauantely smash Silva – wish we all knew what really was going on! He may of made the cacth 22 a win win for himself now though.

    anyway Happy Friday world – sure the truth will comeout sooner or later!

    Anyone watching Henderson fight this weekend? Why did he leave UFC on a high?

    Just for everyones information, the whole reason Dana doesn’t want fedor in the UFC is because Fedor and his manager wanted 50% ownership of the UFC. Also when you have time, You-tube Silva pre-UFC fights. In one video a guy about 50lbs smaller then him took him down with ease. He also got DQ in 4 or 5 fights because hes a dirty fighter.

    Fedor and his manager did NOT want 50% ownership in the UFC. This is either a blatant lie or unfortunate misunderstanding by Dana White. I spoke with M-1 Global’s lawyer personally. They asked for a larger percentage of the gate, PPV, and Fedor-specific merchandising at events where Fedor fought as the main event and were willing to share the costs of promoting the events Fedor headlined as a co-promotion between M-1 Global and the UFC. Now, you may or may not think Fedor deserved that deal, but at least know what you’re talking about. He didn’t ask for 50% ownership of the UFC.

    With the exception of the heavy weight dv Silva can smash anyone in the UFC. Dana needs to seek some one out whos really going to go after Silva. You cant put a toy in front of a child and expect him not to play with it. Thats all Damian Maia was for the Champ. Silva’s doing the right thing in my opinion. If he pisses people off he will draw out a real fighter. Damian Maia is no hump but hes nowhere near ready for spider. MMa fans should blame Dana cause that main event was a joke from the start.
